This page is a continuation of the work compiled by Wendy Jack from Generations 1-4 of the BARTLEY FAMILY. There are once again several notable stories.
John Hamilton GRAY as premier of PEI hosted the Charlottetown Conference in 1863 which laid the ground work for Canada's Conferation some four years later. Regrettably for GRAY, the people of PEI rejected union at that time and he resigned. Had he stayed in office for another four years, one of life's ironies is that the Fathers of Confederation would have included two John Hamilton GRAYs - the second was premier of NB.
Acheson George Henry GILMORE, Samuel GILMORE and David JACKSON are all related to Sir Thomas JACKSON are part of the larger HSBC story. (The last I know of this Samuel GIMORE is that he was a Japanese prisoner of war in a Hong Kong hotel)

[xii] Sarah evidently took this advice, for she later recorded:  8 Apr - John S. Ried died today, to whom I was engaged for some time. [xiii] The couple parted and went their separate ways - John's taking him to India, and Sarah's eventually to Australia. John died 8 April 1886 in Cachar, Assam, India. [xiv]

+    90     iv. Georgina Louisa DENNISS was born in June 1861. [xxx]

       55.  Susan Ellen BARTLEY was born circa 1825. [xxxi]   Susan married John Hamilton GRAY . [xxxii]   John was born on 14 June 1811 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. [xxxiii]   He was the son of Robert GRAY and Mary BURNS .  John grew up on Prince Edward Island, and in his teens was sent to England to complete his education.  In his early twenties he joined the British Army, and served with the 7th Dragoon Guards for 21 years, mainly in India and South Africa, and retired with the rank of colonel in 1852.

On his return to Prince Edward Island, John quickly became involved in the political affairs of the colony.  He was appointed to the Legislative Council on 12 April 1854, but resigned his position to return to military duty at the outbreak of the Crimean War.

After a further two year absence, John again returned to Island politics at a time when religious differences were set to be a dominant factor in political life for twenty years.  He was a strong supporter of the view that the Bible should be taught in schools - a view vigorously opposed by the Island's large Catholic minority.  As an elder of St James kirk and the chairman of several influential Protestant meetings in 1857 and 1858, John came to be seen as a champion of the Protestant cause - a position which in no way harmed his political aspirations, as he was elected with large majorities in the so-called "Bible elections" of 1858 and 1859, a Conservative member for a predominantly Protestant electorate.

John was part of the all-Protestant Conservative government formed by Edward Palmer after the 1859 election.  When Palmer had moved to the Legislative Council in 1860, John became government leader in the Assembly.  He was an advocate of tenants' rights, and the leading proponent of land commission schemes which would allow tenants to purchase the lands on which they lived.  He became embittered when the British Government bowed to pressure from wealthy landlords and disallowed the Island legislation.

John's lack of success in the land issue did not adversely affect his career, as the dominant issue in the election of January 1863 was again the religious education controversy.   When he was re-elected, John resigned from the Executive Council, leading to a crisis which saw Edward Palmer removed from the Conservative leadership and John Hamilton Gray installed as Premier on 2 March 1863.

John's period as premier coincided with discussions regarding the union of the British North American colonies.  John supported confederation, believing that unity would give the colonies a stronger position in dealings with Britain, but most Islanders were opposed to any sort of union. As premier of the host colony, John chaired the Charlottetown Conference held in September 1864.  At this time, Susan's health was very poor, but she was able to attend a banquet for the delegates held at the Grays' home, Inkerman House (named for the battle in which Susan's step-father won honours), and also a ball held in the Provincial Building. However, her failing health prevented her from travelling, and her eldest daughter accompanied John to the Quebec conference and then to Ottawa in her mother's place.

Faced with a lack of support in his own party, and following the rejection by the PEI legislature of the Quebec resolutions which outlined the terms of Confederation, John resigned as premier on 20 December 1864, and retired from politics.  Some observers attributed his resignation at least in part to his wife's deteriorating health.

Susan died 12 November 1866 at Inkerman House in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. [xxxiv]

After Susan's death, John married secondly Sarah Caroline CAMBRIDGE in 1869, and had a further three children. [xxxv]   John's withdrawal from politics allowed time for a greater commitment to his other great interest - the militia.  He had been since 1862 the commanding officer of the volunteer brigade of the Island, and in 1867 was appointed adjutant general of the militia of the Island. In 1873 he accepted a position as deputy adjutant general of the newly formed Military District No.12 of the Dominion of Canada. John died 13 August 1887 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. [xxxvi]
