This JACKSON family - first based in Lincolnshire and then in Cuddeston, Oxfordshire - is connected by marriage to other land-owning families in Co. Sligo.
It may be significant that their family crest includes three birds that resemble the ones in the arms of the JACKSONs of Coleraine, Forkhill and Creggan – the latter two families were based in Co. Armagh.
A key source used to compile this tree was from a transcription of a family bible included in: Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica Vol IV 1884. Another useful site was: British 1820 Settlers to South Africa. Also, for the PILFOLD connection, SEE: Burkes General Armory of England Scotland Ireland and Wales. 1884

JACKSONs of Cuddeson, Oxfordshire, England

This family is connected by marriage to other families in Co. Sligo, and they have a family crest that has the same birds that can be seen in the JACKSONs of Coleraine, as well as in Forkhill and Creggan – both in Co. Armagh. A key source for the Cuddeson JACKSONs was transcribed from a family bible and included in: Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica Vol IV 1884. Another site key to fleshing out this tree was: British 1820 Settlers to South Africa. Also, for the PILFOLD connection: Burkes General Armory of England Scotland Ireland and Wales. 1884

Because of the connection of Mary CROFTON, grandmother of the Gilbert JACKSON (b 1684) to the PERCIVALs and CROFTON families of Co. Sligo, Mary CROFTON may be key to understanding more about various JACKSON emigrations to Ireland.

  • Gilbert JACKSON b 1684 married Jane ALDWORTH daughter of Richard ALDWORTH & Mary CROFTON (d 1705). NOTE: There are two ALDWORTH lines - one with multiple descendants based in Ireland and one based in England. They both share the "stem" but otherwise seem to be distinct despite the significant influence of both in the affairs of Ireland. SEE: Aldworth of Newmarket Court (Co. Cork) and Aldworth of Stanlake Park
  • Mary CROFTON’s first husband was George PERCIVAL (d. 1675) of Temple House, Co. Sligo
  • Mary CROFTON (d 1705) was a great-grand-daughter of John CROFTON the Escheater General of Ireland (d. 1610).
  • The Sir Oliver CROFTON who married Abigail JACKSON (one of the JACKSONs of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland and Coleraine, Londonderry) was a 4th great grandson of John CROFTON the Escheater General of Ireland (d. 1610).
  • This makes Gilbert JACKSON & Abigail JACKSON 2nd cousins 3 times removed – far fetched I know – but it is curious that both of their family crests featured three birds (shovellers and sheldrakes).

Also NOTE:

NOTE: In 1880 Col. W.H.M. JACKSON sought family info in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica Vol III New Series 1880. His obit in 1916 reveals him to be a son of William Henry JACKSON (1803-1843) and Elizabeth Sarah MUNTON, hence a descendant of Rev Gilbert JACKSON (1704-1779).
