The Birch Family

  First Generation

   1.  James BIRCH birth date unknown. 

       James married Mary JACKSON . [1]  

       In 1725, James purchased the farm now known as Birch Grove from John BIRCH. [2] It was a property of 176 acres located in the parish of Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. The relationship between James and John is not known at present, but John had been granted the land by Sir John MACGILL on 13 April 1692. [3] .
James died in 1727. [4]

       James BIRCH and Mary JACKSON had the following children:

    +      2    i.    John BIRCH was born circa 1711 [5] and died 31 July 1773. [6]

            3    ii.    James BIRCH of Madden Hill in the parish of Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland .  James married Lettice (surname unknown) . [7]   They had no children. James died in 1797. [8]

            4    iii.    Miss BIRCH .  She married Mr HARDY [9] of Cooley Hill. [10]

            5    iv.    Miss BIRCH .  She married Andrew CRAWFORD [11] of Lenaderg in the parish of Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland

            6    v.    Miss BIRCH .  She married Andrew TODD [12]   of Lenaderg in the parish of Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland.

  Second Generation

       2.  John BIRCH of Birch Grove, Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland was born circa 1711. [13]   John married firstly Miss BAXTER . [14]   ohn married secondly Jane LEDLIE . [15]   Jane was born circa 1716. [16]   She was the daughter of John LEDLIE of Carnan, Arboe Parish, Co Tyrone .  Jane died 23 September 1791. [17]  

       John died 31 July 1773. [18]

       John BIRCH and Miss BAXTER had the following child:

    +      7    i.    Elizabeth BIRCH was born on 16 October 1733 [19] and died 28 June 1812.[20]

       John BIRCH and Jane LEDLIE had the following children:

    +      8    ii.    John BIRCH was born circa 1737 [21] and died 7 November 1786. [22]

    +      9    iii.    James Jackson BIRCH was born in 1740 [23] and died 10 October 1820. [24]

    +    10    iv.    George BIRCH died 16 January 1814. [25]

          11    v.    William BIRCH .

          12    vi.    Oliver BIRCH .  He emigrated to America [26] .

          13    vii.    Mary BIRCH . 

                     Mary married Mr KING . [27]   He was the son of Rev. John KING of Dromara, Co Down, Ireland .  It is not known as yet whether Mary and her husband had any children. The International Genealogical Index records the births in Dromara of several children to a Henry KING and his wife Martha Jane HENRY: John (1817), Sally Birch (1819), Robert King (1825) and James Birch (1833).  In 1837, a John KING married Martha MACK in Dromara, and had at least two children: Robert Baxter (1838) and Mary Birch (1840).  The persistence of the given name Birch suggests that all of these people may have been descendants of Mary KING née BIRCH.

          14    viii.    Sarah BIRCH .  Sarah married Mr ORR . [28]

    +    15    ix.    Thomas Ledlie BIRCH was born on 24 April 1755 [29] and died 12 April 1828. [30]

 

Third Generation

       7.  Elizabeth BIRCH was born on 16 October 1733. [31]  

       Elizabeth married firstly William BREAKEY on 3 March 1758. [32]   William is presumed to have died before 1760. [33]   He was said to have been a relative of the Breakey family of Drumskelt, Ballybay, Co Monaghan. [34] This connection is as yet unproven, although it seems likely in view of the limited occurrence of the surname, and also the links to that area of other generations of the family.

       Elizabeth married secondly Alexander GILMER of Sion Hill in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland on 14 March 1760. [35]   Alexander was born in 1735. [36]

       Elizabeth died 28 June 1812. [37]

       Elizabeth BIRCH and William BREAKEY had the following child:

    +    16    i.    Elizabeth BREAKEY was born in 1758. [38]

       Elizabeth BIRCH and Alexander GILMER had the following children:

          17    ii.    Alexander GILMER [39] .  He was an officer of the East India Company and fought at Seringapatam. [40]

    +    18    iii.    Eleazer Birch GILMER was born circa 1763 [41] and died 29 July 1834. [42]

    +    19    iv.    John GILMER was born on 26 September 1764. [43]

  

       8.  John BIRCH was born circa 1737. [44]  John married Jane WATSON on 12 February 1770 in Seaforde, Co Down, Ireland. [45]   Jane was born circa 1741. [46]   She was the daughter of George WATSON of Craigduff, Co Down, Ireland and Elizabeth DUMBEL .  Jane died 28 May 1819. [47]  John died 7 November 1786. [48]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [49]

       John BIRCH and Jane WATSON had the following children:

    +    20    i.    George BIRCH was born in 1771 [50] and died 28 October 1827. [51]

          21    ii.    John BIRCH of Birch Grove, Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland was born circa 1772. [52]   John died 28 January 1836. [53]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [54] It is not known if John married and had children. However, there is a headstone in the Tullylish Graveyard that may relate to his descendants.  A John BIRCH of the Island (a sub-division of Birch Grove) died in 1841 aged 52 years; his wife Martha died in 1858 aged 54; their children, Margaret died 1892 aged 49, George died 1896 aged 74, Eliza Jane FOSTER died 10 May 1896 aged 74, and Thomas died 1908 aged 79.     +    22    iii.    Ann BIRCH was born circa 1774 [56] and died 10 February 1860. [57]

          23    iv.    Elizabeth BIRCH was born circa 1777. [58]   Elizabeth died 13 October 1863. [59]   She was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland.[60]

       9.  James Jackson BIRCH was born in 1740. [61]   James succeeded his father-in-law as the minister of the First Dromara Presbyterian Congregation, where he was minister for 56 years until his death. [62] He was in turn succeeded by his grandson, Rev. James Birch BLACK. [63] James married Mary KING . [64]   She was the daughter of Rev. John KING of Dromara, Co Down, Ireland .  Mary died 22 December 1796. [65]   She was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [66]  James died 10 October 1820. [67]   He was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [68]

       James Jackson BIRCH and Mary KING had the following children:

          24    i.    Samuel BIRCH .  He died young. [69]

          25    ii.    James BIRCH .  He died young. [70]

          26    iii.    John King BIRCH .  He was a linen factor of Phibsborough, Dublin, Ireland.

                     John married firstly Susannah LOWRY on 9 December 1792. [71]   She was the daughter of James LOWRY of Linen Hill .  Susannah died 22 October 1798. [72]   She was buried in Garvaghy Churchyard in Garvaghy, Co Down, Ireland. [73]  

                     John married secondly Agnes CANTWELL in January 1801. [74]

       10.  George BIRCH birth date unknown.  He was a surgeon in India, and owned lands in Co Down at Ballybeen, Ballyroney and Ballybrick. [83] George married twice.  No details of his first wife are known at present, nor is it known which wife was the mother of his children.

       George married secondly Charlotte Catherine QUIN . [84]   Charlotte was born circa 1754. [85]   At the time of her marriage to George, Charlotte was a widow. She married firstly Major William WILDER .  Charlotte died 25 July 1813. [86]  George died 16 January 1814. [87]

       George BIRCH had the following children:

          35    i.    George BIRCH was born in 1779. [88]   George died in 1809. [89]

          36    ii.    John BIRCH .  He was involved in the 1798 Irish Rebellion, instigated by the United Irishmen.  John was killed in the Battle of Saintfield on 10 June 1798. [90]

    +    37    iii.    Isabella Anna Jane BIRCH was born in 1784 [91] and died 12 November 1850. [92]

    +    38    iv.    James BIRCH was born in 1786 [93] and died 15 August 1859. [94]

    +    39    v.    Sarah BIRCH .

          40    vi.    Elizabeth BIRCH was born in 1788. [95]  Elizabeth married firstly James USSELL in 1805. [96]   of Deramore, [97] Co Down, Ireland

                     Elizabeth married secondly John HUME .

       Major William WILDER and Charlotte Catherine QUIN had at least one child:

                  i.    Catherine WILDER was born in Bombay, India on 9 September 1777.  After the death of her father and re-marriage of her mother, Catherine was raised by her step-father, George BIRCH.  She married Joseph JERRARD on 6 November 977 in Comber, Co Down, Ireland, and had seven children including George Birch JERRARD, who was named for his step-father.

                     Catherine died 6 April 1850.

       15.  Thomas Ledlie BIRCH was born on 24 April 1755. [98]  

       Thomas married his second cousin Isabella LEDLIE in December 1783. [99]   She was the daughter of John LEDLIE of Carnan, Arboe, Co Tyrone, Ireland . Thomas died 12 April 1828 in Washington, Washington Co, Pennsylvania, USA. [100]

       Thomas Ledlie BIRCH and Isabella LEDLIE had the following children:

          41    i.    Thomas Ledlie BIRCH .  Thomas died in 1802 in Ireland. [101]

          42    ii.    John Ledlie BIRCH .

          43    iii.    Elizabeth BIRCH .

  Fourth Generation

       16.  Elizabeth BREAKEY was born in 1758. [102]  

       Elizabeth married Thomas BRADFORD of Cavananore, Co Louth, Ireland on 27 August 1781. [103]   Thomas was born in 1739. [104]   He was the son of John BRADFORD and Barbara COULTER .  Thomas died in 1790. [105]

       Elizabeth BREAKEY and Thomas BRADFORD had the following children:

    +    44    i.    Elizabeth BRADFORD was born circa 1785 and died 12 July 1825.

          45    ii.    Margaret BRADFORD was born circa 1786.  Margaret died 17 August 1874.  She was buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard in Kane, Co Louth, Ireland.  She remained single.

          46    iii.    Andrew Coulter BRADFORD was born circa 1788. [106]   Andrew died 10 May 1847. [107]   He was buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard in Kane, Co Louth, Ireland.  He did not marry.

          47    iv.    Barbara BRADFORD . 

                     Barbara married William DONALDSON . [108]

       18.  Eleazer Birch GILMER [109] was born circa 1763. [110]   He was a captain of the East India Company and fought at Seringapatam. [111]

       Eleazer married his first cousin Rachel BIRCH on 14 April 1799. [112]   Rachel was born circa 1777. [113]   She was the daughter of James Jackson BIRCH and Mary KING .  Rachel died 14 August 1831. [114]   Eleazer died 29 July 1834. [115]

       Eleazer Birch GILMER and Rachel BIRCH had the following children:

          49    i.    Alexander G.B. GILMER was born circa 1800. [116]   Alexander died 31 December 1822. [117]   He was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [118]

          50    ii.    Eliza Jane GILMER . 

                     Eliza married Adair BLACK of Dublin, Ireland on 5 September 1825 in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [119]

          51    iii.    Ellen GILMER was born circa 1807. [120]   Ellen died on 19 October 1824. [121]   She was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [122]

    +    52    iv.    James Birch GILMER was born circa 1808 [123] and died 8 March 1877. [124]

          53    v.    Wellington GILMER was born circa 1810. [125]   Wellington died 29 January 1822. [126]   He was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [127]

          54    vi.    Rachel GILMER was born circa 1813. [128]   Rachel died 17 November 1826. [129]   She was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [130]

          55    vii.    Caroline GILMER was born in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland on 23 July 1818. [131]   Caroline died 5 February 1825. [132]   She was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [133]

        56    viii.    Wilson Mills GILMER was born in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland on 13 October 1823. [134]

       19.  John GILMER [135] was born on 26 September 1764. [136]

       John GILMER had the following child:

    +    57    i.    Samuel GILMORE .

       20.  George BIRCH was born in 1771. [137]   He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1790 and graduated B.A. in 1795. He was ordained in 1796, was curate of Larne 1796-98 and perpetual curate of Comber until his death. [138] George married Anne JOHNSTON in 1790. [139]   Anne was born circa 1876. [140]   She was the daughter of Adair Blair JOHNSTON of Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland and Margaret JOHNSTON .  Anne died 7 August 1842 in Newtownards, Co Down, Ireland. [141]  George died 28 October 1827. [142]   He is commemorated by a memorial in the parish church in Comber, Co Down, Ireland, where he presumably was buried. [143]

       George BIRCH and Anne JOHNSTON had the following children:

          58    i.    Robert Johnston BIRCH was born in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland on 20 July 1799. [144]   He was educated at the Royal School of Armagh, and entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1817.

                     Robert served as a officer in the East India Company, joining the Bengal Army as a cadet in 1819.  He was promoted to ensign on 30 April 1820, and to lieutenant in 1823. [145]

                     Robert died 20 August 1825 in Aracan, Burma. [146]   His death date suggests that he was killed during the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824-1826.  Burma had for some time been pursuing a policy of expansion.  In 1766 the Burmese had seized Tenasserim from Siam. They subjugated the kingdom of Aracan in 1784, and in 1813 conquered Manipur. Assam was also conquered in 1821-1822, and in September 1823 Burma seized the island of Shahpouri near Chittagong, a holding of the East India Company.  The Burmese then made preparations for an attack on the East India Company's territory of Bengal. On 24 February 1824, the Governor General of Bengal, Lord Amherst, declared war on Burma.  The EIC forces expelled the Burmese from Assam, but made little progress on the Chittagong front, where they met determined Burmese resistance. In March 1824, the capital of Aracan fell to the British, and on 11 May a naval expedition took Rangoon.  A Burmese force of 60,000 was defeated outside Rangoon in December, and in May 1825 Prome, the capital of Lower Burma, was also taken.  The war ended with the signing of a peace treaty at Yandabo on 26 February 1826.  The Burmese ceded Assam, Aracan and Tenasserim to the East India Company, Manipur became independent, and Burma had to pay a war indemnity.  The East India Company suffered heavy losses during the conflict, a large part of which resulted from disease.

          59    ii.    George Watson BIRCH was born circa 1801. [147]   He attended the Royal School of Armagh, [148] then entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and graduated B.A. in 1824. He was ordained in 1828 and succeeded his father as perpetual curate of Comber, Co Down, Ireland 1828-30. [149]

                     George died 18 September 1830. [150]

          60    iii.    John BIRCH of Birch Grove, Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland was born circa 1803. [151]  John married his first cousin Mary Jane McCONNELL on 5 March 1845. [152]   Mary was born circa 1805. [153]   She was the daughter of Francis McCONNELL and Ann BIRCH .  Mary died 22 February 1879. [154]   She was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [155]  John died 10 February 1858. [156]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [157]   As John and Mary had no children, on John's death Birch Grove passed to his cousin and brother-in-law, Hugh McCONNELL [158] .

          61    iv.    Adam BIRCH .  Adam died on 12 December 1837 in Demerara, British Guiana. [159]

          62    v.    James BIRCH was born circa 1808. [160]   James died 18 June 1837 on his passage from Demerara, British Guiana. [161]

          63    vi.    Randal BIRCH .  McClelland records that Randal died at Santa Cruz. [162] There are many places of this name around the world, and as yet nothing has been found to indicate at which one James' death occurred.  The possibilities include: Canary Islands, California, Solomon Islands and Bolivia.

          64    vii.    Mary Watson BIRCH .  Mary died 9 November 1891. [163]   She remained single.

          65    viii.    Margaret BIRCH .  She did not marry.

       22.  Ann BIRCH was born circa 1774. [164]  

       Ann married Francis McCONNELL . [165]   Francis was born circa 1761. [166]   Francis died 24 February 1825. [167]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [168]  Ann died 10 February 1860. [169]   She was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [170]

       Ann BIRCH and Francis McCONNELL had the following [171] children:

          66    i.    Mary Jane McCONNELL was born circa 1805. [172]  

                     Mary married her first cousin John BIRCH of Birch Grove, Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland on 5 March 1845. [173]   John was born circa 1803. [174]   He was the son of George BIRCH and Anne JOHNSTON .  John died 10 February 1858. [175]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [176] As John and Mary had no children, on John's death Birch Grove passed to his cousin and brother-in-law, Hugh McCONNELL [177] .

                     Mary died 22 February 1879. [178]   She was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [179]

          67    ii.    Ann McCONNELL was born circa 1809. [180]   Ann died 22 July 1885. [181]

          68    iii.    Francis McCONNELL was born circa 1811. [182]   Francis died 14 July 1872. [183]

          69    iv.    George McCONNELL was born circa 1812. [184]   George died 28 October 1854 in San Francisco, California, USA. [185]   He is remembered on his parents' gravestone at Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland.

          70    v.    John Birch McCONNELL was born circa 1814. [186]   John died 18 April 1890. [187]

    +    71    vi.    Hugh McCONNELL was born circa 1816 [188] and died 24 April 1898. [189]

       27.  Miss BIRCH birth date unknown.  She married James BLACK in October 1793. [190]   He was a chandler of Ballynahinch, Co Down, Ireland. [191]

       Miss BIRCH and James BLACK had the following child:

          72    i.    James Birch BLACK .  He succeeded his grandfather as minister of the First Dromara Presbyterian congregation. [192] James died 3 October 1823, leaving a widow and family. [193]

       31.  Rachel BIRCH was born circa 1777. [194]  

       Rachel married her first cousin Eleazer Birch GILMER on 14 April 1799. [195]   Eleazer was born circa 1763. [196]   He was the son of Alexander GILMER and Elizabeth BIRCH .  He was a captain of the East India Company and fought at Seringapatam. [197] Eleazer died 29 July 1834. [198]  

       Rachel died 14 August 1831. [199]

       Eleazer Birch GILMER and Rachel BIRCH had the following children:

          49    i.    Alexander G.B. GILMER was born circa 1800. [200]   Alexander died 31 December 1822. [201]   He was buried in the Dromara First Presbyterian Graveyard in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland. [202]

       Catherine Sarah BIRCH and Thomas KENNEDY had the following children:

          73    i.    Isabella KENNEDY was born in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland on 6 September 1817. [220]

          74    ii.    Eliza Jane KENNEDY was born in Dromara, Co Down, Ireland on 10 August 1819. [221]

       37.  Isabella Anna Jane BIRCH was born in 1784. [222]  

       Isabella married Randal William McDonel JOHNSTON on 9 June 1806. [223]   Randal was born in 1777. [224]   He was the son of Adair Blair JOHNSTON of Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland and Margaret JOHNSTON .  Randal died 9 September 1838. [225]   He is remembered on a plaque inside the parish church in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland, and is presumed to be buried in the Glynn Graveyard. 

       Isabella died 12 November 1850. [226]   She is remembered on a plaque inside the parish church in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland, and is presumed to be buried in the Glynn Graveyard. [227]

       Isabella Anna Jane BIRCH and Randal William McDonel JOHNSTON had the following children:

          75    i.    Adam Blair JOHNSTON was born in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland on 3 April 1808. [228]   He was educated at the Royal School in Armagh, Co Armagh, Ireland. [229]   Adam served as an officer of the Honorable East India Company Army.  He joined as a cadet in Madras in 1825, and was promoted to ensign on 8 January 1826.  On 5 September 1827 he was again promoted to lieutenant in the 46th Madras Native Infantry. [230] [231]

                     Adam died unmarried 26 November 1828 in Vepery, Madras, India. [232]

          76    ii.    Charlotte Catherine Birch JOHNSTON was born in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland on 1 January 1810. [233]   Charlotte died unmarried on 16 May 1895. [234]   She was buried in Glynn Graveyard in Glynn, Co Antrim, Ireland. [235]

    +    77    iii.    George Birch JOHNSTON was born in March 1811 [236] and died 19 February 1885. [237]

       44.  Elizabeth BRADFORD was born circa 1785. 

       Elizabeth married Benjamin OLIVER . [278]   of Killynure, Co Armagh  The Oliver family originally came from France and settled around Armagh.  At one time they owned lots of landed property in the Killylea and Lisnadill districts, and also had connections in Dublin. [279] Although it has not yet been verified, Benjamin may have been the son of the David OLIVER referred to in At the Ford of the Birches:In 1766 Bryan Burns of Laragh demised to David Oliver, of Ballyrea, Co. Armagh, the corn mill commonly called Lough Egish mill.  It would appear that the concern got into debt and was 'rescued by D McTear who in the process received a lien on the property.  When David Oliver died, there was some difficulty in settling the estate.  In 1815, the Court of Chancery ordered that in consideration of the outstanding debts being discharged, McTear should assign the bleaching mill and green, in their actual possession, to Oliver's sons Joseph, William and Benjamin. [280]

       Elizabeth died 12 July 1825.  She was buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard in Kane, Co Louth, Ireland.

       Elizabeth BRADFORD and Benjamin OLIVER had the following children:

       Hugh died 24 April 1898. [337]   He was buried in Tullylish Graveyard in Tullylish, Co Down, Ireland. [338]   Probate of Hugh 's will was granted in Belfast, Ireland on 11 January 1899. [339]   The executors were George B. McConnell of Gilford, B.A., John T. Towers of Edenderry, Kings County, bank manager, and Matthew Edwards of Belfast, gentleman.  Hugh's estate was valued at £22,324 9s. 9d.  In his will Hugh referred to his nephew John Birch McCONNELL of New York; this person's place in the family has yet to be established.

       George died 19 February 1885. [348]   He is remembered on a plaque in the parish church at Glynn, Co Armagh, Ireland; [349] presumably he is buried in the graveyard there.

       George Birch JOHNSTON and Jane Waring EVANS had the following children:

         113    i.    Elizabeth Thomasina Evans JOHNSTON was born on 10 June 1856. [350]   Elizabeth married Rev Robert McLennon Lauriston LEE on 26 June 1884. [351]   He was the son of Rev. Dr Alfred J. LEE .  Elizabeth and Robert had three sons and a daughter. [352] Robert died 2 April 1916. [353]   Elizabeth died 28 September 1938. [354]

         114    ii.    Randal William JOHNSTON was born on 8 September 1858. [355]   He was educated at Cheltenham and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. [356]   He served as a captain in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. [357]   He later was a Major in the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. Randal died unmarried on 1 April 1942. [358]

         115    iii.    Thomas Kelly Evans JOHNSTON was born on 1 May 1860. [359]  

                     Thomas married Margaret Ross GRAY on 19 March 1891. [360]   She was the daughter of Archibald GRAY .  Margaret died 1 March 1947. [361]

         116    iv.    Isabella Eva JOHNSTON . Isabella died unmarried on 17 February 1953. [363]

         117    v.    George Birch JOHNSTON was born in Larne, Co Antrim, Ireland on 28 September 1866. [364]   He attended the Royal School in Armagh, Co Armagh, Ireland. [365]   During the Boer War George served as a private in the Thornycroft Mounted Infantry. [366]   He later worked as a customs officer in South Africa, before retiring to England. [367]     Around 1958 he was residing at 128 Dorchester Road in Weymouth, Dorset, England. [368]

         118    vi.    Charlotte Mona JOHNSTON .  Charlotte died unmarried on 28 February 1919. [369]

         119    vii.    Charles McGarel JOHNSTON was born on 3 May 1876. [370]   Charles served as a trooper of the British South Africa Company during the Matabele uprising in Rhodesia in 1896, [371] and during the Boer War he was a lieutenant in the 5th Rhodesian Volunteers.  Charles married Margaret THOMPSON 2 November 1908. [372]   Margaret was born circa 1881. [373]   She was the daughter of Arthur Raine THOMPSON .  Margaret died 22 February 1970. [374] Charles died 4 October 1918. [375]   Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, 4th Edn, records that he was "torpedoed of Irish Coast en route to S. Africa".  He was probably a passenger aboard Hirano Maru, a Japanese steamer which was torpedoed by a German U-Boat off Ireland on that day.
