COULTER TREE NUMBER 1

 

This COULTER family tree is the one connected with the famed botanist, Thomas COULTER of Carnbeg. Much of it originated with materials found in the Dundalk library and has been altered as new evidence emerges thanks to the work of Wendy Jack, Steven Sims and others.

 

I am particularly indebted to E. Charles Nelson, the author of A Man Who Can Speak of Plants: Dr. Thomas COULTER (1793-1843)1994. This splendid book was published privately in a run of 500 copies. I have #467.

 

There are a number of people who are descendants of the people named in this tree who I would love to be able to connect with (if they are still living). These family members are: Brian COULTER; the descendants of the late Dr. Michael COULTER; Mrs. Barbara HANNA; Ian Coulter SMYTH; Phillip HARRISON and C.T. McCREA.

·         His will mentioned a niece: Jane COULTER and a nephew, John COULTER.

·         A Man Who Can Speak of Plants, p. 4. His older brother Andrew stayed in Scotland and that line died out. They were known as "COULTRAN". By the time of his death, Alexander COULTRAN had changed the name to "COULTER".).

·     St Nicholas Gravestone, Flat limestone slab: - Here lieth the Body of Samuel COULTER of Carnbeg who died 18th September 1760 aged 60 Years And of Mary his wife who died 15th May 1771 aged 54 Years. Also the Body of Samuel COULTER of Carnbeg, nephew of the above who died 16th June, 1801, aged 46 Years. And of Anne his widow who died 16th August 1803 aged 31 Years. And of Joseph COULTER of Dowdalshill who died 15th Febry 1815 aged 59 years and Jane Irwin his wife who died 23rd July 1869 aged 85 years.

·         Dundalk Library family tree, Carnbeg was the home of Samuel COULTER who possessed a remarkable library and had a collection of Irish manuscripts. In 1800 he commissioned Patrick Lynch to write down the saga Tain bo Cuailnge "for three pennies a page or a shilling a quarto".

·         Notes at Dundalk Library, So in 1801 at Carnbeg there remained Sam 46 and Anne 29 plus Sam's sisters Elizabeth 43 and Jane 41 referred to in letter as "the girls". plus Sam & Anne’s children Thomas 8, Joseph 6, Jane 5, Sam 3, Robert 1.  When Sam died in 1801, he left the family home to 3 year old Sam who died unwed in 1840. ·          A Man Who Can Speak of Plants, p7. Anne DICKIE was the daughter of Robert DICKIE and Mary REID.  She was born 1772, and died 06 Aug 1803

·         I depart from the version by John Dickie of Casino (which constituted part of the notes at Dundalk Library) and use the tree of Philip Harrison in "A Man Who can Speak of Plants", p.4. In this tree, “Anne” DICKIE is named “Jane” DICKIE, but since other information overlaps, I feel the placement is correct.

·         Dundalk Library family tree, Graduated from Trinity College with a degree in medicine and subsequently studied botany in Paris and Geneva. He worked in Mexico and California and brought back the white flowering poppy subsequently named "Romneya Coultieri". The herbarium at Trinity was established in 1840, with the personal herbarium of Thomas Coulter as its nucleus.

o   P1. Dr. Thomas Coulter of Dundalk is remembered as a botanist, was particularly as the person who discovered the beautiful white-flowered matilija (California tree poppy) which is best known by its scientific name Romneya coulteri (Plate 1). The use of a single word ‘botanist’ to encompass the life work of Thomas Coulter is most an adequate, however, for he was a man of many interests, with considerable skills and fields of knowledge far removed from botany.

o   P1. Coulter was a charitable kindly physician. His passion for the natural world led him to collect and study insects and reptiles as well as plants. He was a superb angler and an excellent shot with a rifle. Through his friend the Rev. Dr. Thomas Romney Robinson, he developed a strong interest in astronomy and he was a competent surveyor and draughtsman. For almost one decade, Coulter lived in Mexico where he had responsibility for managing silver and lead mines. He explored the country, riding many hundreds of miles through central Mexico and Southern California. Coulter was fluent in Spanish and having also lived and worked in France and Switzerland, in French. He knew some of the greatest botanist of his era, men such as Robert Brown, Aylmer Bourke Lambert, Alexander von Humbolt and Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle; they respected him any value their friendship.

o   P. 154: "Thomas Coulter was tall, handsome, and an excellent shot, and as William Harvey observed, addicted to fly fishing. He was perhaps not so much courageous as oblivious to danger."

o   P.155: “Coulter went to Mexico as a physician, to attend to the miners brought out from England. The accounts that survive suggest he was a charitable man who put his patients first and did not care about payment. Alas, he was unable to cure himself of the severe and unpleasant illnesses that beset him in his latter years. Gout, rheumatism and a serious intestinal condition ultimately sapped his strength and his will, and contributed to his early death.”

·         The Newry Commercial Telegraph, February 22, 1828. On the 18th instant, by the Rev. Robert Winning, Mr.  ROBERT COULTER, of Dundalk, to JANE, eldest  daughter of the late Mr. Joseph Coulter, of Dowdalshill,  County of Louth.  February 22, 1828.

·         Jane COULTER was the daughter of JOSEPH COULTER and JANE IRWIN.  She was born Abt. 1805 (Source: Steven Sims email 2007 Dec 21.).

·         Since Joseph A. COULTER was referred to as the "second son of Mr. Robert Coulter" (Tempest Annual Centenary 1859-1959, 122), there must be a first son. I am guessing that he might be a Samuel.

..................6  Joseph Arthur COULTER Born after his first brother who was born after 1828. Died October 3, 1901. He married Elizabeth McDOWELL who died in 1928

·         Tempest Annual Centenary 1859-1959, 122, Mr. Joseph A. Coulter, JP, of Dowdallshill and Roden Place (the second son of Mr. Robert Coulter solicitor and first Secretary of the Lighting Paving and Improvement Committee, 1832), spent the early part of his life abroad, in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company and elsewhere, and at one time acting or Deputy Governor of Vancouver Island. He was with the escort who late accompanied Lady Franklin [Jane Franklin (1791-1875), the daughter of John Griffin, silk weaver, and Mary Guillemard, was born in London. In 1828 she married John Franklin, who was appointed lieutenant-governor of Van Diemen's Land in 1836] on her last expedition in search of her husband, Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer. His family has been connected with this county for seven or eight generations. For many years at up to the time of his death in 1901, he was the able Secretary of the Dundalk Gas Company.  He married the daughter of Mr. John McDowell of Mullaharlin.  His eldest son, Mr. Arthur S. Coulter, B.A., Solicitor has inherited his father's practical commonsense and integrity.  NOTE: This article mentions 7 or 8 generations – we can only so far go back 5 to Alexander COULTER born in Scotland. I suspect that Joseph Arthur COULTER travelled with Leopold McCLINTOCK of Dundalk on the ship “The Fox” that was sponsored by Lady Franklin, but that she was not on the ship. This ship returned in 1859.

·         http://water.nv.gov/Water%20planning/carson/carson2.htm#N_165_  1868 (February) Construction was begun by Joseph Coulter on the Mount Bullion Tunnel Company Dam and Mill. The dam was located on the Carson River East Fork just above its confluence with Monitor Creek. The mill was ready in May 1869 and on the 15th of that month a flood weakened the structure. In December 1871 the dam failed completely and washed into the Monitor & Northwestern Company Dam located just downstream. The dam was never replaced. ·         Bassett, George Henry, Louth County Guide and Directory, Dublin 1886 (Reprinted by CLAHS 1998), 317, J.A. COULTER, sec. gas works. Roden Pl. NOTE: It would seem that he succeeded his father to this post.

·         There was a bill for a tombstone addressed to Mrs. J.A. COULTER, Roden Place, Dundalk dated January 13, 1903.

·         1895 Feb 6. A letter from Eliza JACKSON mentions Mary MENARY visiting Mrs. Joseph COULTER.), daughter of John MCDOWELL.  She died 1928.

·         Probate of the Will of Joseph Arthur Coulter late of Roden-place Dundalk County Louth J.P. who died 3 October 1901 granted at Armagh to Elizabeth Coulter the Widow [Elizabeth COULTER nèe McDOWELL (d.1928)] and Arthur S. Coulter [His son, a solicitor] Gentleman and Robert J. Coulter F.R.C.S.I. [ Facts about Robert J. COULTER (b. 1868-)

o   He was the son of Samuel Alexander COULTER & Elizabeth PARKS.

o   In the 1901 census of England, Robert James Coulter was enumerated at Bristol Gloucestershire; age: 32, birthplace: Dundalk, Ireland, occupation: ophthalmic surgeon. It would seem likely that he was the same Robert J. Coulter FRCSI who was an executor of the will of Joseph Arthur Coulter.

o   Since Robert J. COULTER was orphaned at the age of three, presumably he was raised by a relative and if Joseph Arthur COULTER was his uncle (brother of Samuel Alexander COULTER), he would be a logical candidate for the guardian. o   Joseph Arthur COULTER has one brother whom we have no name for as yet, as well as another sibling. It is possible that Samuel Alexander COULTER was one of these siblings. It is also telling that he and his wife are on the Carnbeg COULTERs gravestone.

·         The Belfast News-Letter (Belfast, Ireland), Tuesday, November 18, 1879  COULTER - November 16, at Dundalk, Jane, second daughter of the late Robert Coulter, solicitor. Interment this (Tuesday) afternoon, at three o'clock.  NOTE: This is a hunch placing her here.

Louth married Jane IRWIN b: 1785 m: 1802 d: 23 Jul 1869 NOTE: Since Joseph COULTER was age 46 at the time of this marriage, it is not impossible that this was a second marriage for him and that his first marriage resulted in a child or children, - possibly including the Thomas COULTER (c1796-1846) of Dowdalshill. The death of a wife in childbirth was not unusual, nor was the speedy marriage afterwards.

·         Notes at Dundalk Library, He inherited Dowdallshill from his Uncle Joseph who died in 1796. In 1796 or 97 Joe moved to Dowdallshill taking perhaps Francesca as housekeeper. She was now 27.  In 1802 Joe who was 46, married Jane Irwin who was 17. In 1803 the first of their six children was born and they took over the upbringing of Sam & Annies 5, presumably at Dowdallshill

Joseph COULTER had married Jane Irwin in the summer of 1802, and the couple now took on the formidable task of looking after their orphaned nephews and niece. This was a formidable enterprise for Jane Coulter, who was only 17 years old (21 years younger than her husband) and who had only recently given birth to her first child, Samuel.

·         Steven Sims in an email December 21, 2007 adds: He would be the Thomas listed as a tenant of Lord Roden at Dowdallshill in 1837, as it is the lease that his father held originally from 1810; but this is the only other firm reference I have.
