· "of Grogan" Groggan is a small village, more like a crossroads, about 4-5 miles northwest of Randalstown in Drumaull Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The map of Groggan Co., Antrim shows Groggan near the left hand edge, Drummaul near the left center top, and Randalstown is the shaded town area indicating a larger town at the left of center on the bottom edge.
· Another possibilty is "Gortgarn" or "Gortagharn", both townlands in County Antrim, Randalstown district of the Upper Toome Barony. Any of these would coincide with his father's residence in the Randalstown area. There is a probate record for a James McCullock, 1725, baroney of Tome, co. Antrim, gent., which could fit this man. In addition, there is a probate record for Henry McCulloch Esq whose will was probated in Fewghoge, County Antrim in 1728. This could fit James brother, the townland of Feehogue is also in Randalstown district, Co. Antrium, Upper Toome Barony.

Email Bob Epperson January 2019: I know this is used in a number of places, but I have never been able to verify the source, and think it may be a confusion between Henry McCullagh son of William below and his wife Mary, but I can’t even confirm that Mary as wife of Henry McCulloch Sec of NC may have been a Houston although the Houstons and McCullochs were closely related and intermarried. As far as this Henry is concerned he seems to have been a bit of a rascal when it came to the ladies. He worked under his oldest brother James in a wine import business in Belfast (ROD Bk 41, No 27023, pp 490-91). He was in London on his own by 1726 (ROD Bk 29, No 31992, p 284). He had a son James by an unidentified woman. In 1740 he sailed to NC as Commissioner of Quit Rents and took Penelope Eustace and their two young children Penelope and Henry Eustace McCulloh (their spelling of the name) as well as James. Henry Penelope and the two younger children returned to London in 1747. Henry and Penelope were clandestinely married on 9 Aug 1749 (See attached Henry McCulloh – Penelope Eustace Marr 9 Aug 1749 mrkup). Penelope the daughter died 8 Jan 1766 in Chiswick, London. Penelope the mother died 25 Apr 1766 in Chiswick, London. The son Henry Eustace returned to North Carolina to manage his father’s estate, and son like father took a mistress. He returned to England in 1767 or 1768 leaving his pregnant mistress behind. She bore a child named George McCulloh, who Henry charged his cousin James Irdell (US Supreme Court Justice) with the child’s care. Henry Eustace McCulloh married Udall West 18 Sep 1790 in St Marylebone Parish London (he was described as a bachelor) and died in 1812. Udall died in 1842.

McCulloh of Piedmont was born before 1700. He died in 1743 at the
age of 43 in Ireland, County Antrim, Piedmont. He had his estate probated in
1743 in Ireland, County Antrim, Piedmont. He was also known as William McCulloh
of Piedmount, William McCulloch of Camoley, Co Armagh
on 19 Jun 1736 in Ballysavage, Antrim, Ulster,
Ireland. He died 1743 in Piedmont, Antrim, Ulster, Ireland
·
William
McCullock of Piedmont, will probated in 1743, is the
brother of James McCulloh and Old Henry, all sons of James McCulloch of Grogan
by his second wife. From references to him in other wills abstracted in the
Registry of Deeds and Wills for Dublin, his death is estimated as between 1736, when he was named as a trustee in the will
of James Crawfuird (Crawford) and 1745 when his
eldest son was mentioned as James McCulloh of Piedmont in the will of William's
brother, James McCulloh. William McCulloch of Piedmont was also listed as
trustee in the 1728 will of John Shaw.
·
Locating
the probate of the will for William of Piedmont confirms that he died prior to
the death of his brother James, which accounts for his son James being known as
James of Piedmont in his uncle's will.

· ROD 544-48-357378 dated 1 Jan 1802 recites a deed from 22 Nov 1800 which must have been the marriage settlement for Dorothy and her marriage to John Reed. In this she put her property in the hands of her father-in-law and attorney James Moody in trust for the use of her husband. However, she reserves the right to dispose of the property in anyway she sees fit in the event there are no children. Her husband, 91 when he died in 1860, was born in 1768 or 1769 which makes him nearly 12 years younger than his wife. Her reservation of the right to dispose of her property to another in the event of no children implies that she may have already gone through menopause or knew she was approaching it. The marriage settlement and the trust acknowledge that her sister Ann must have been in poor health because it anticipates her death rather a marriage. The expectation of an early death for Ann is fulfilled and the trust is renewed om ROD 682-435-469603 dated 2 Dec 1814 after the death of Ann and also after the death of Dorothy’s father-in-law, John Reed the elder of Ballymoyer.
