The registers of the Church of St. Michan, Dublin. Dublin: Printed for the Parish Register Society of Dublin by A. Thom & Co., 1907.
|
After the reformation, the Protestant Government took over the Church of St. Michan (in Church Street) in 1540 and the Catholic priests had to find new ways of providing the Sacraments to their faithful. They had to resort to the back streets for those purposes. St. Michan's Mass House was in a back room of a house and became the first Parish Chapel recorded in Penal Times. SOURCE: Bryan Shortall Blog. |
In the 1600s and 1700s, St. Michans congregation included many Quakers and other “dissidents” as well as merchants connected to the linen trade. The parish also included many who were poor along with those who were members of the upper echelons of Dublin society (or close to upper echelons). My focus being on JACKSONs, there are several different family lines which enticed me to take a careful look at the St. Michan’s Church registers.
1. Rev. William JACKSON b. 1713 in Dublin. Based on my work with deeds, it is likely he was the Rev. William who then ended up in Rocksavage, Cork. If so, his father was another Rev. William JACKSON – but who was his father and where did he come from?
a. 1734. WILLIAM JACKSON, D. D. Prebendary of St. Johns; elected October 10th; instituted October 14th; installed October 16th. He died in February, 1735/6, and was buried either at St. Michans or St. Johns Church.
b. 1725/6. WILLIAM JACKSON, M.A. and D.D. was elected February 17th; admitted March 2nd; installed next day. In 1734 he became Prebendary of St. Michans. SOURCE: Fasti ecclesiae Hibernicae : the succession of the prelates and members of the Cathedral bodies of Ireland
c. Governor of the Workhouse: William Jackson, D.D. Prebendary of St. Michans (Dublin) 1735 Vol 7. Gentleman and Citizens Almanac p51
Governor of the Workhouse: William JACKSON, D.D. Prependary of St. Michans 1736 Vol 8 Gentleman and Citizens Almanac p 68
2. Henry JACKSON (1750-1817) was one of those JACKSONs of Ballybay, Co. Monaghan who were active in the United Irishmen. Although they were connected to this church in the late 1700s, I can find no mentions of them in the early Church Register (he is not to be confused with another Henry JACKSON, who was a church elder).

a. Sir Richard Robert MADDEN claims that a tombstone memorial to Oliver BOND had been erected by his widow, a daughter of Henry JACKSON of Church Street, but that it had been damaged and moved. Is the one above a replacement?
i. The tombstone over it was on the left-hand side of the church by the ball and nearly opposite the entrance to the vaults on that side. There I saw it in 1841 in 1842, but there exists no longer. On visiting the spot last Monday it was only after a long search that I found this too much injured one large piece entirely broken off in a corner at the other end of the churchyard adjoining Bow Street, and in the same place the tombstone of the Rev. William Jackson, who died in the court of King's bench, in the city, in 1795. SOURCE: a letter published March 27, 1847 in Freemans Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser.
ii. Henry JACKSON had a foundry at Pill Lane which was mentioned in a number of deeds. He sold everything when he had to flee to America. Pill Lane is now called Chancery Street. It intersected with Church Street.
iii. The fact that the United Irishmen Rev. William JACKSON was also buried with Oliver BOND and his JACKSON relations may be telling in terms of a possible familial link but it may be that the link was political.
3. Rev William JACKSON (1737-1795)
5. JACKSONs of Coleraine, Antrim & Londonderry: Several of their relations were connected to St. Michan’s and at least some of them had residences nearby.
a. Collins Peerage of England Vol 8 mentions members of the extended O'NEILE family of Coleraine who were buried at St. Michan’s in the 1700s. Since Anne O'NEILE was the wife of Richard JACKSON (1729-1781), it would not be surprising if some of the JACKSONs mentioned in the records were also from Coleraine. NOTE: The O’NEILEs in the Church Register do not seem to be related. One was a coachman and one a huxter (peddler), and one was described as poor. The relations of the Coleraine O’NEILEs were landlord and merchant class.
i. Katherine BERESFORD (d. 1701), widow of Sir Randal BERESFORD, was buried at St. Michans. Her sister-in-law was Susanna JACKSON née BERESFORD (d 1706). Susanna lived nearby on Church Street with her brother-in-law Samuel JACKSON (1641-1706).
vi. Samuel JACKSON (1641-1706). He was a wealthy merchant and landowner. His sister-in-law Susanna BERESFORD lived with him after her 2nd marriage (to Col. John MITCHELBURN) broke down. They both died on the same day. Samuel was buried at St. Paul’s in 1706. NOTE: Arran Quay was part of the parish of St Michan's Halston St until 1707 when it was created a parish in its own right and given the name St. Paul's.
NOTE: There were two different St. Michan’s churches: the Catholic JACKSONs from the St. Michans North Anne Street and the Church of Ireland JACKSONs on Church Street (the two churches are near each other). SEE: RC records I have merged them because it might help to notice if there are any families that had been Protestant, but who became Catholic.

The Oliver JACKSON in list of Connaught Certificates. Transplanters AD 1653-1654 was likely the Oliver JACKSON b 1605. A Capt. Oliver JACKSON was his nephew and a son of Col. Francis JACKSON of Mayo. This nephew married Jane KING and they are the likely parents of Frances. See Also: History of Crossmolina by Tony Donohoe. |

The Richard JACKSON (b 1635) son of Rev. Richard JACKSON (1602-1601) and Dorothy OTWAY has not been fully accounted for and many of siblings settled in Ireland. |

I suspect there was a transcription error in the name of the father. Probably John not Joanna. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
1697 Feb 19 |
Parents: Capt. William JACKSON & Elizabeth, his wife. |
She is possibly the daughter of Capt. William JACKSON (1669-1712) of Coleraine and his wife Elizabeth GORGES (1675-1747). If so, she likely died as an infant and a 2nd Susan followed (who married John HAMILTON). |
