I, Joseph JACKSON[1] of Richhill[2] parish of Kilmore[3] and County of Armagh, in the name of God, do make this my last will and testament. I leave and bequeath to my son John JACKSON[4] the Tanyard property with all its appurtenances both front and rear as more commonly described by a map attached to a fee farm grant by which I hold my title thereto. To him his heirs assigns or administrators in his full and ample manner as I hold myself. He accounting with my son George JACKSON for 300 pounds sterling, in the following manner, that is to say that he is to withhold 200 pounds sterling in order to reimburse the said John JACKSON for a portion of the loss sustained by him, with and on account of said George JACKSON. And to pay unto the said George JACKSON the sum of 100 pounds sterling making up the above mentioned 300 pounds. And I also leave and bequeath to my son John JACKSON the house I live in, my land in Maynooth[5] formerly in possession of John ATKINSON[6], also my land in Liskborough[7], also my tenement on the Southside of Richhill formerly in possession of Edward CORTIGAN[8]. I also will and bequeath to my son John JACKSON the dispensary property[9] with all buildings, land and appurtenances attached or thereunto belonging as appears by a map attached or belonging to the fee farm grant, thereto, to have and to hold to him his heirs assigns or administrators. The said John JACKSON paying well and truly unto my daughter Mary JACKSON[10] the sum of ten pounds sterling per annum during her natural life by two half yearly installments, one on the first day of May and the other on the first day of November. I leave and bequeath to my son Robert JACKSON[11] 600 pounds sterling due me by the representatives of the late Mary CAMPBELL[12] of Gortnaghy[13] in the county of Monaghan. He the said Robert JACKSON paying to my wife Mary JACKSON[14] the sum of £12 sterling per annum during her life payable half yearly every first day of May and first day of November. I leave and bequeath to my wife Mary JACKSON the dividends on 400 pounds government stocks standing in my name in the Bank of Ireland during her life, and at her death the 400 pounds to be divided between my son George JACKSON[15] and my grandson Alexander JACKSON[16]. Alexander’s portion to be under the control of my executors to be used as they may think best for his advantage, and 400 pounds to be divided in equal parts between said George and said Alexander JACKSON. Other £400 of like government stock, the dividends on which I leave and bequeath to my daughter Mary JACKSON during her life, and at her death power to will the 400 pounds of stock as she may think proper Should she get married with a full approval and consent of my executors I then give her power to sell or dispose of the stock as she and my executors may think proper. I will and bequeath to my son John JACKSON all my chattels outside, and all the ready cash I may die possessed of, from which she is to pay costs of administration and duties and funeral expenses, all my chattels inside the house. I leave and bequeath to my wife Mary JACKSON, and my daughter Mary JACKSON to be equally divided between them. And I appoint my son John JACKSON residuary legatee, and I appoint my sons John JACKSON and Robert JACKSON my executors to this my last will and testament and faithfully carried out. Witnesses present dated this third day of May the year 1867 Joseph JACKSON [WITNESSES] James BEST[17] John McCLATCHEY[18].

 

PROBATE: The Will of Joseph Jackson late of Richhill County Armagh Farmer deceased who died 23 August 1868 at same place was proved at Armagh by the oaths of John Jackson of Richhill aforesaid Leather Merchant and Robert Jackson of Tullamore King's County Inland Revenue Officer the Executors. [1] Joseph JACKSON (1801-1868)

·         Death Cert: Joseph JACKSON of Richhill, married, farmer, age 67. Aug 23, 1868.  Son John JACKSON present at death. Est birth 1801.

[2] Rich Hill or Legacorry, Parish Kilmore (ONeilland West portion), Barony Oneilland West. It is mid-way between Portadown and the City of Armagh and is sometimes spelled as Richhill. Louisa BACON was an owner in Rich hill who leased a few lots to Joseph JACKSON.

·         The 1821 Census segment of Kilmore Parish does not mention this family although there is another JACKSON family mentioned on pages 45-6 in the Townland of Crucat [a townland name that no longer exists]. They included:  James JACKSON (1775-aft 1821); wife Mary (1776-aft1821) dau Mary JACKSON (1803-aft 1821) and James JACKSON (1809-aft1821). Does not mention this family.

·         Other Richhill JACKSONs:

o   3 May 1866. Birth of Rachel JACKSON in Richhill, dau of Philip JACKSON and Mary PIERSON

o   13 Jan 1872. Birth of Hannah JACKSON in Richhill, dau of Philip JACKSON and Mary PIERSON

o   14 Oct 1872 Birth of Thomas JACKSON  in Richhill, son of William JACKSON & Anne McCLELLAND.

o   25 Mar 1869. Birth of William JACKSON in Richhill son of Robert JACKSON & Mary GREER.

[4] John JACKSON (1827-1890) Son of Joseph JACKSON

·         His 1st wife, Lucy JACKSON née JONES died Mar 29, 1877 of puerperal fever [“parturition and Scarlatina”], eight days after the death of her daughter [Lucinda Catherine]. Lucy JONES was 24 years old. NOTE: I have not been able to find their marriage cert.

·         His 2nd wife was Catherine GIRVIN, daughter of John GIRVIN, Gent of Moneyquin, [Parish Lisnadil (Armagh portion), Barony Armagh] Co. Armagh. They married January 21, 1880 at 20 Lower Gardiner St, Parish St. Thomas, Dublin. They had no children.

·         Death cert: d. Oct 30 1890, married, age 63. He died at Richhill of Nasal Polyps & General Asthma. His sister-in-law A. GIRVIN was present at his death (His wife’s sister).

[5] Maynooth, Parish Kilmore (ONeilland West portion), Barony Oneilland West. It is a townland just south of Village of Richhill.

[6] John ATKINSON?

[7] Liskborough – aka Liskyborough, Electoral Division of Rich Hill, Parish Kilmore (ONeilland West portion), Barony Oneilland West, this townland is on the west side of the village of Richhill.

[8]Edward CORTIGAN?

[9] The dispensary is listed in Griffiths, Lot 83, and was on Broad Street.

[10] Mary JACKSON (1832-1882)

·         Death Cert: spinster age 50 died 5 June 1882 of cirrhosis of the liver at Richhill. Her brother John JACKSON was present at her death. Their father was a tanner. SOURCE Death cert. In the probate of her will, her effects awarded to her brother amounted to: £425.

[11] Robert JACKSON (abt 1830-1902)

·         MARRIAGE: 1883 Oct 24 a Robert JACKSON of 18 Harrington St. son of Joseph JACKSON Merchant married Anna Matilda HALL, dau William HALL Gent. SOURCE: Marriage Cert.

·         SON: Their son, Robert Henry Gordon JACKSON, was born Sep 20, 1886 and baptised at St. Peters’, City of Dublin, November 11, 1886. The family resided at 18 Harrington St. and his father was a chemist. SOURCE: Baptismal record.

·         1901 Census: Robert JACKSON age 41 b. Co. Armagh, Analytical Chemist & Anna JACKSON age 51 born at Co. Wicklow. Henry HALL was also at residence. His wife Anna, born in Co. Wicklow, is ten years older – age 51 NOTE: I suspect that this was a typo in the Census, and he was age 71.

·         DEATH: Died Oct 21, 1902 at 18 Harrington, age 72. Ex Supervisor Inland Revenue. SOURCE: Death cert.

·         PROBATE: National Archives Dublin. December 17, 1902 Probate of will of Robert JACKSON late of 18 Harrington-street Dublin, Ex-superintendent Inland Revenue who died October 21, 1902 granted at Dublin to Anna M. JACKSON the Widow. Effects: £1,139 19s 9d.

·         Anna Matilda JACKSON, the wife of Robert Sr. died Mar 20, 1904 age 56 (therefore b 1848), widow of an excise Supervisor and died of chronic hepatitis. SOURCE: Death Cert.

·         PROBATE in England: the following: Robert JACKSON of Harrington Street, Dublin, died 21 October 1902. Probate Dublin to Anna M. Jackson widow. Sealed London 9 February [1903]. Effects £61 13s 3d in England.

·         PROBATE of his wife: June 2, 1905 of Anna M. JACKSON late of 18 Harrington-street, Dublin, Widow, who died March 20, 1904 at the Home Hospital Portobella, Dublin, granted at Dublin to Henry E. HALL.

[14] Mary JACKSON (1799-1882)

·         She died at Richhill Apr 14, 1882 age 83. Her son John JACKSON was present at her death SOURCE: Death Cert:

[15] George JACKSON (1833-1905)

·         PROBATE: Administration of the estate of George Jackson late of Richhill County Armagh Farmer who died 7 May 1905 granted at Armagh to Thomas Henry Hardy Farmer. (Limited Grant) Effects £681 17s.

·         DEATH: Died May 8, 1905 at Richhill, widower, age 72, shop-keeper. Malignant disease of Prostrate 1 year 6 months and coma 48 hours. SOURCE: Death Cert.

·         MARRIAGE: I have not found a marriage cert, and suspect they married prior to 1864. After that, Irish marriage records became more readily available. If she was of full age, it would not have been abt 1863.

·         1901 Census: George JACKSON, Hardware Shop, House 33 Shankhill Rd., with wife Mary A. JACKSON.

·         WIFE: Mrs Mary A. JACKSON died 1904 Belfast, her husband George JACKSON resides Rich Hill, Co Armagh, their son Alexander JACKSON resides Chicago, IL date 1904-10-20 SOURCE: Irish Gleanings.  This was most likely George’s wife.  It is a match with a death Cert for a Mary Anne JACKSON age 62 who died July 24, 1904 at Belfast at 18 Lismain St, Belfast in presence of husband George JACKSON a retired Hardware Merchant. Her probate: Administration of the estate of Mary Ann JACKSON late of 18 Lismain St Belfast who died 24 July 1904 to George JACKSON Gentleman the husband. Effects £777 7s 3d

[16] Alexander JACKSON (bef 1868-aft 1904)

·         NOTE: I could not find a birth cert. for Alexander JACKSON. I suspect that he was born prior to 1864. After that, Irish birth records became more readily available.
