OLIVERs of Mullinture and Tullysarren, Parish
of Eglish, Co. Armagh
I have developed this family tree for the OLIVERs of Mullinture
based on deeds and other sources and have then appended the pertinent deeds.
Thanks to huge gaps in the records that I have to date, this particular page is
more likely than many to be rife with errors. I am sharing what I haveso
far in the hopes that it can act as an
aide to puzzling out more. It is exceedingly important that the assumptions in
this page do not blind us to other and possibly truer options.
I have flagged items that I want to show up in my “to
do” list in red.
·
In
1703, a William, Mary & Jane OLIVER were already living at Mullintur[1],
in the Parish of Eglish (there are two townlands named Mullintur but the other
one is unlikely). No mention is made of how they might be related to each
other. They may have been siblings, or related in marriage or cousins – all
bets are on the table at this point.
·
Mary
OLIVER married James DOBBIN in 1711 (see beneath) The fact that a Mary OLIVER
of this line (see beneath) married a DOBBIN is significant because the
OLIVER-DOBBIN link is also corroborated in the earlier histories relating to
the OLIVERs of Killinure (my family line). NOTE: I
believe that somewhere I have a reference to an even earlier DOBBIN-OLIVER
marriage – mid 1600s. Need to find.
·
There
is no mention of a Jane OLIVER in marriage records (so far) although in 1710 a
Jane McCULLAGH married a John McCULLAGH. Given other errors in the 1st
Presbyterian Armagh Register (it is a typescript record copied from the
original register), it is not to be ruled out that this Jane McCULLAGH was in
fact an OLIVER – although this is too feeble a hunch to base anything on at
this time.
·
There
is also a George McCULLAGH who married a Margaret OLIVER in 1750 – which given
how often cousins married cousins may be significant even though it is a
generation later. Since a significant branch of the McCULLAGHs lived near
Newtownhamilton, the family of Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton may be involved.
·
NOTE:
A copy of the dissertation by a William OLIVER (1659-1716)[2]
is held in the collection of the Armagh Robinson Library. Why would they have a
copy? He allegedly came from an OLIVER family in Cornwall and died unmarried –
so I do wonder what the connection with Armagh might be.
·
Michael
DOBBIN (Email Jan 24, 2005) mentions that William, the brother of Mary, was a
was a prominent member of society …. possibly an author. This may be one
of those bits that got muddled in generations of family stories. That there was
an author in the OLIVER family is entirely possible. That he was the brother of
Mary of Mullintur, not necessarily. The occupation of farmer or linen draper is
a better fit.
·
St.
Marks burials have a record of an Elinor OLIVER of Mullintarr who was buried
May 10, 1753. I suspect a relation.
1. William OLIVER.
Born: Before 1703 – likely before 1680
Considerable detective work has been done here and more is needed, although the
required records may elude us.
·
NOTE: page 11 of Irish Ancestry of Henry (William) OLIVER
mentions a William OLIVER born about 1670 possibly at SherranmcAghully
(AKA Farmacaffley), Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh or Tattykeel, Parish of
Kildrss, Co. Tyrone and hypothesises that he was a son of Andrew OLIVER of
Tattykeel and therefore the brother of an Eliza OLIVER who married John VANCE
(page 10). The author suggests that he probably died before 1740. This
conjecture was based on the fact that he was not listed among the Protestant
Householders at that time. The difficulty with this is that these records have
only survived for 6 parishes in Armagh.
·
Some of Irish Ancestry of Henry (William) OLIVER is based on the
document called Account of William OLIVER and his descendants written in
1903 by an unnamed elderly relative. I have yet to
source this document, although I have written to the descendants of the man who
commissioned the Irish Ancestry to ask for it.
·
In 1709 & 1710 & 1712 in the 1st Armagh Presbyterian
Registry, several births of children to Andrew, William & Stephen OLIVER
are noted – this cluster of names fits with the names of three brothers
mentioned in Irish Ancestry of Henry (William) Oliver a generation
earlier – The Andrew who was the father of this William as also a brother to a
Stephen and a William. Also, I suspect that the Presbyterian Church is a
closed fit with Huguenot descendants and OLIVERs who were farmers and in the
linen industry than the Church of Ireland might have been.
·
Interestingly, a RootsWeb tree of the SPEER family has this William OLIVER
born in Latakeel, near Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, Ulster. The source they used was:
Irish Pedigree. John O’Hart. Not
all the facts in this tree ring true.
For example, Elizabeth VANCE née OLIVER is alleged to have been born in 1700
and to have died in 1800. Without documentation to validate them, deaths at age
100 are usually suspect.
·
NOTE: The Armagh Hearth Rolls of 1663 show Stephen & William OLIVER
at Ballyduffe And Andrew OLIVER at SherranmcAghully. None of these townland
names are current, but SherranmcAghully is now known as Farmacaffley, Parish of
Lisnadill and Ballyduffe is known as
Ballydoo, Parish of Eglish (thanks to Kay Muhr, a senior fellow researcher with the Northern Ireland
Place-Name Project at Queens University. Ballydoo is in the southern part of
the Parish of Eglish – a few small townlands south of Mullinture.

William OLIVER. An OLIVER-HOLMES 1807 Jan 20 DEED 580-365-398643 refers to an
earlier deed of 1761 where lands of Tullysaren were granted to William OLIVER
of Mullintur. NOTE: Tullysaren is on the eastern border of the townland of
Mullinture. In another deed (1771 Sept 17, Deed 287-474-187934), a William OLIVER of
Mullintur is mentioned in connection with selling the lease for Tyrearly – a
townland in the Parish of Lisnadill and north of Killinure – just one townland

[15] Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton, a distiller and brother of William (of Mullinture who died a bachelor abt 1779), Mary who married DOBBIN & John of Tullymore.
[16] Elinor OLIVER, wife of Andrew OLIVER distiller of Newtownhamilton. They had several children.
[17] Thomas VERNER of Churchill, Parish of Killyman, Co. Armagh. The will of Thomas VERNER of Church Hill, Co. Armagh, 1786 is at PRONI: D/2538 under the VERNER WINGFIELD Papers.
SOURCE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/armagh/churchill_bell.shtml In the late 18th century Mr Thomas Verner, a descendant from an early plantation family who had settled in Ulster in the early 17th century, bought about 4,000 acres from Lord Charlemont in the northern part of Co Armagh. He established a landed estate and built a house at the centre of his lands at Churchill in the townland of Mullenakille, close by to what is now known as Vernors Inn. He also set up a farming business. Thomas was successful and passed on to his great grand nephew William a thriving rural gentleman's enterprise known as Churchill House and Estate. Unfortunately, the estate did not fare so well under successive generations and finally in 1927 things came to an end.
[18] Enagh, Co. Monaghan. There are three townlands of this name in Co. Monaghan. I don’t know which one it might be. The Parish of Ematris is the best bet based on the fact that the VERNER family still had it in the Griffiths Valuations. Also of interest, this parish is just to the west of Aughnamullen, a parish that had other OLIVER interests.
[19] Edmond MADDEN of Lismaclin, Co. Tyrone Clerk.
[20] Lismaclin, Co. Tyrone It is tempting to see this as perhaps a transcription error for Lismulladown in the Parish of Aghaloo – a parish where there is a focus for the Tyrone branch of the OLIVER family.
[21] John BRYAN of the City of Dublin yeoman.
[22] John RICHARDSON of Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone, Surveyor
[23] Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton, a distiller and brother of William OLIVER (of Mullinture who died a bachelor abt 1779), Mary who married DOBBIN & John of Tullymore. Wife, Elinor – many children.
[24] William OLIVER of Tullysarren, Co. Armagh, Gent. I am working on hunches here, but I think it quite possible that he is the son of John OLIVER (d. 1772) of Tullymore - a brother of the Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton. This is only a possible placement based on a mention as a nephew of William OLIVER alongside the reference to John OLIVER (a possible brother) in Deed# 580-365-398643
[25] Rev. & Dr. Hugh HAMILTON (1729-1805) Dean of Armagh; TCD MA, 1750; DD, 1762; FTCD, 1751-64; professor of natural philosophy, 1759; dean of Armagh, 1768-96; FRS; Bishop of Clonfert, 1796-99; Bishop of Ossory, 1799; collected works (1809). He had an interest in the observatory. I do not know if he was related to the Jane HAMILTON who married Joseph OLIVER of Tullymore. His son Hans HAMILTON, clerk married Susanna OLIVER (b. 1764 in Ardagh, Ireland) daughter of Silver OLIVER. SOURCE: DEED: 536-286-354735.
[26] Elinor OLIVER – we do not know her maiden name.
[27] Rev. Andrew OLIVER of Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. He shows up there in the 1788 poll of electors. If he was a nephew of the William OLIVER who died between 1776-1779 (see Deed: 580-365-398643), then it is most possible based on what we know at this time that he was a son of John OLIVER of Tullymore, brother of the aforementioned William.
[28] Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton. Brother of William OLIVER (d. bet 1776-1779)of Mullinture and John of Tullymore (d1772). He was a distiller and husband of Elinor and they had many children whose names I do not yet have.
[29] John OLIVER of Tullymore. He was the father of Rebecca OLIVER & Andrew OLIVER and also was the brother of William OLIVER –the bachelor linen draper who died probably in 1779. A John OLIVER of Tullymore died in 1772 (SOURCE: Will Probate).
[30] Tullymore, in the Parish of Armagh. SEE My web page under Maps for Tullymore.
[31] James OLIVER of Augsebragh.
I can’t yet place him. In the same time frame as
this lease, PRONI Freeholder records of 1796 show a James OLIVER as well as a
John OLIVER leasing land at Tulnaloobe (AKA Tullynaloob) – a townland in the
Parish of Drumkeeran, Co. Fermanagh.
Also, a James OLIVER of Armagh who leased lands in 1818 & 1828 in
Lislooney. There is also a James OLIVER (1791-1863) in the Nicholson OLIVER
line from Co. Tyrone (many family names are the same). James & Mark OLIVER
leased land at Lismullydown, Parish of Aghaloo, Co. Tyrone in 1796 as did
Robert OLIVER in nearby Aughasallagh. Interestingly, in the records of 1st
Presbyterian Church, Armagh there is a record of the birth of a James OLIVER(1715), son of Andrew
OLIVER. This might make him a son of Andrew
OLIVER of Newtownhamilton. SOURCE: The Irish
Ancestry of Henry William OLIVER, Henry Oliver Rea,
1959 has a James OLIVER,
SON OF Stephen born in 1750, in Tattykeel or Corchoney Townland, Parish of
Kildress, CO. Tyrone.
[32] Augsebragh. There is no townland with the name in modern times in
Co. Armagh. My best guess is Armaghbrague in the
southernmost tip of the Parish of Lisnadill and with Tullyvallen (Parish of
Newtownhamilton) on its southern border. That is, if the borders did not
change. If it is in Co. Tyrone, then Aughasallagh is also a good bet.
[33] William OLIVER. This is possibly the father of William, Mary, John & Andrew OLIVER, the same William OLIVER who died in 1726 (SOURCE: Will Probate)
[34] Mullinture AKA Mullanture is in the Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh. It is bordered on the east by Tullysarren.
[35] Tullysarren, Parish of Eglish, bordered on the west by Mullanture. Of interest is that in 1825, leases were in place by the Earl of Charlemount to James KILPATRICK, Charles NIMMO (life of John NIMMO) James McMAHON & John SANDERSON. Eglish Parish. 2007 LDS Film # 853875 has many NIMMO & OLIVER references. Regrettably, I did not transcribe any of the NIMMO records, but my vital statistics files include a record of a Margaret OLIVER, daughter of Anthony OLIVER marrying a Charles NIMMO son of Charles NIMMO in 1847 in Eglish Parish. NOTE: A John SAUNDERSON married a Sarah OLIVER in 1805. SOURCE: National Archives 2007 notes on Marriage bonds.
[36] William OLIVER. Probably the bachelor linen draper who died in 1779.
[37] Andrew OLIVER – this would be the one of Newtownhamilton.
[38] John OLIVER – this would be the one of Tullymore
[39] Rev Andrew OLIVER – this would be the one of Enniskillen.
[40] Samuel KNIPE deceased. Interestingly, in Deed: 313-580-211019, 1777, Jan 27 involving the linen draper Robert JACKSON, John POOLER was named as the executor of Samuel KNIPE late of Ballymatran. (Probably Ballymartrim, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh).
[41] John MOSSON, Merchant of Town & County Armagh. He witnessed other deeds: 1781, Nov 7 &1771 Sept 17.
[42] Henry HUTCHINSON, innkeeper – there may be a familial connection. In 1776 a Robert OLIVER married Agnes HUTCHINSON (SOURCE: National Archives 2007 Notes on Armagh Marriages). The 1833 Tithe Appointments for Eglish Parish show a Robert OLIVER at Mullinture.
[43] Andrew OLIVER of Tullysarren, Co. Armagh farmer. At this time, I am unsure which Andrew OLIVER this might be. We are late enough in the 1700s to make this quite possibly an Andrew OLIVER of a generation that is at best foggy to us. Of Coures, Tullysarren is on the border of Mullinture, so I do suspect a connection to the Mullinture OLIVERs of the early 1700s.
[44] Joseph MANN The Irish Ancestry of Henry William OLIVER, Henry Oliver Rea, 1959 shows that there are familial links between the OLIVERs of Tyrone & the MANN family.
[45] Andrew OLIVER of Newtownhamilton. Brother of William OLIVER (d. bet 1776-1779)of Mullinture and John of Tullymore (d1772). He was a distiller and husband of Elinor and they had many children whose names I do not yet have.
[46] Elinor OLIVER – her maiden name is not known to me yet.
[47] Andrew McMATH. I do not know who he was, although I find it of interest that an Andrew McMATH & wife Sarah of Urker, Co. Armagh had a daughter in 1843 (Since Eliza JACKSON née OLIVER lived there too at this time, this bespeaks a McMATH- OLIVER connection. SOURCE: PRONI MIC 1-11 Creggan Church Records. Also, in 1861, an Andrew McMATH was a bank manager at Castleblayney for the Belfast Bank. In Griffiths, such a name shows up in Castleblayney on Noble Street. By the time of Griffiths Valuation, the resident of Aghadreenan, Parish of Donaghmoyne, Co. Monaghan.was Hamilton McMATH. Also in Griffiths, Andrew McMATH was the owner of TULLYARD (OSNB i 5): The road from Crossmaglen to Castleblaney passes thro' this td. Its distance from Crossmaglen Is about 1 1/2 miles & from Castleblaney about 3 1/2.
[48] Aughadreenan AKA Aghadreenan, Parish of Donaghmoyne, Co. Monaghan.
[49] Francis McCAMMON
[50] John MURPHY
[51] John STEELE, City of Dublin Attorney. I have no idea who he might be, but there is an OLIVER-STEEL connection in 27 Aug 1757 when William OLIVER of Farmacaffley married Elizabeth Steel of Drummad. SOURCE: St. Patrick's Cathedral, Church of Ireland, City of Armagh. NOTE: There is a townland of Drumadd in the Parish of Armagh which would have been nearby to Ennislare. NOTE: A William STEEL had a holding in Dromadd and a residence at Dromogher SOURCE: PRONI Freeholders Records: D/1928/F/1B 1753 Co. Armagh Poll Book
[52] James NIBLOCK of Castleblayney, Co, Monaghan Innkeeper
[53] Robt WELSH of Tullymore Parish & Co of Armagh Miller
[54] Tullymore, Parish of Armagh, Co. Armagh was also a long time
residence of various OLIVERs. SEE: Map.
[55] John OLIVER of Tullymore, Parish of Armagh, Co. Armagh, Farmer. I am guessing that this is the son of John OLIVER who died in 1772 probably at Tullymore and is also the husband of Catherine WHITESIDE. It is likely that he died in 1806. SOURCE: 1806, Feb 9, a John OLIVER of Tullymore Sturgeon was interred at St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Church of Ireland).
[56] Tobias MAGUIRE
[57] Drumc??ow , parish of Clonfealle, Co of Armagh is likely Drumcullen, Parish of Clonfeacle, Co. Armagh.
[58] John OLIVER of Tullysarren, Parish & Co of Armagh.
[59] Tullysarren is a townland in the Parish of Eglish, bordered on the west by Mullanture.
[60] Revd James WHITESIDE of Drumflugh, Parish of Clonfeagle, Co. of Tyrone. I am guessing that he is the father of Catherine WHITESIDE who married John OLIVER of Tullymore some time before 1803.
[61] John OLIVER of Tullymore in the County of Armagh Gent
[62] Catherine OLIVER née WHITESIDE wife of John OLIVER of Tullymore, County of Armagh Gent
[63] Revd James WHITESIDE of Drumflugh, Parish of Clonfeagle, Co. of Tyrone. I am guessing that he is the father of Catherine WHITESIDE who married John OLIVER of Tullymore some time before 1803 and also mentioned in 1800 May 5 DEED: 523-426-346117.
[64] Joshua McGEOGH of Drumshill in the
County of Armagh AKA Drumsill, Parish of Grange, CO. Armagh. NOTE: A William
McGEOGH WITNESSED A Ballinahonebeg deed 360-85-241557 Feb 10, 1784. Also, in
1739, May 17 DEED 93-514-661, a Josua McGEOGH of Drumsill witnessed a
HAMILTON-GILLMER deed. CHECK deed 704-529-482264
McGEOGH-NIMMO re: Tullymore.
[65] John OLIVER of Tullycarrent in the County of Armagh father. If Tullycarrent is indeed the same townland otherwise known as Tullysarren, then this John OLIVER is most likely to be connected to the OLIVERs of Mullinture & Tullysarrenmentioned in leases throughout much of the 1700s. I am also of the persuasion that he may also have been known as being of Tullymore.
[66] Tullycarrent
Since there is no such townland currently with this name in Co. Armagh, I am
going to take a leap here and suggest this is likely Tullysarren (until proven
otherwise), Parish of Eglish – the townland that abuts Mullintur. (SEE footnote
for John OLIVER of Tullycarrent) What is curious though is that the townland
index at the Deeds registry included “Tullycarrent” in the list of townlands
associated with the 1804 August
31 DEED: 567-358-381199 between Joseph OLIVER - James HAMILTON and concerning
the marriage of Joseph OLIVER & Jane HAMILTON – but the name does not show
up in the actual deed (I have a copy).
[67] Jas WHITESIDE jr of Drumflugh in the Co of Tyrone Gent. He is most likely a son of Re. James WHITESIDE.
[68] John OLIVER of Tullysarren. Given the date of this deed (1807) and the deed dated 1785 that deeded Tullysarren to a James OLIVER, I wonder if John might be a son of James.
[69] Tullysarren, Parish of Eglish, bordered on the west by Mullanture.
[70] Rebecca HOLMES née OLIVER. SOURCE: National Archives - a marriage bond between Rebecca OLIVER and James HOLMES in 1774. She would be the daughter of John OLIVER and b.1746 SOURCE: Deed 398643 referring to a deed from 1761 November 4 to William OLIVER of Mullintur for the lifetimes of two of John OLIVER of Tullmore’s children: Rebecca age 15 (therefore b. 1746)
[71] James HOLMES husband of Rebecca OLIVER.
[72] Blackwatertown, Parish of Clonfeacle, Co. Armagh
[73] Honourable James Lord of Charlemount
[74] I don’t have this lease. Need to search
under Charlemount leases to see if there is a record in the Deeds Registry.
[75] William OLIVER - the bachelor linen draper of Mullinture who died in 1779. (SOURCE: Will Probate and other deeds)
[76] Samuel KNIPE
[77] William OLIVER of Tullymore. He could be a son of John OLIVER of Tullymore.
[78]Andrew OLIVER of Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. A Rev. Andrew OLIVER shows up there in the 1788 poll of electors.
[79] CALDWELL?
[80] John TROTER of Mullybeggan?
[81] Mullybeggan. There is a Mullyleggan in the Parish of Clonfeacle. Most likely I made a transcription error.
[82] John Lloyd SANDERSON. NOTE: A John SAUNDERSON married a Sarah OLIVER in 1805. SOURCE: National Archives 2007 notes on Marriage bonds. Also, most interestingly, there is a record in 1825 of a John SANDERSON in the leases of Tullysarren from the Earl of Charlemount.
