Coulter Freeholder records from PRONI – townland sort
This does not include all the COULTERs or COLTERs – only the ones that I felt might be most likely to show a relationship to our known COULTERs.
I cannot add much to the background of most of them – save to suspect that many of them are likely to be related to the COULTERs that I am trying to nail down. When it comes to the COULTERs of Mounthill, I feel reasonably sure that they are likely to be relations of the Samuel COULTER who was murdered in 1851. In 1818 and 1826, there was at least one John COULTER, one Samuel COULTER, one Samuel COULTER jr. and one John COULTER jr.. How the relationships between them might look, I can’t say. According to the Creggan records, a John COULTER of Mounthill was confirmed in 1833, at age 16, hence born in 1817. He would make a good candidate for one of the jr. COULTERs. A will was probated for a Samuel COULTER in 1841, but whether he might be the jr. or the sr. one, I can’t say.

[1] Cladymore, Parish of Kilclooney, Co. Armagh.
[2] Alexander COULTER. It may be that he was the grandson of Alexander COULTER (1637-1721) – the ancestor of the COULTERs of Carnbeg.
[3] Clady, probably Parish of Kilclooney, Co. Armagh. Since Cladymore is on the northern border of Cladybeg, I would guess that they are both included in Clady and that the division into two townlands happened after 1723.
[4] Cladybeg, Parish of Kilclooney, Co. Armagh.
[5] Dorsey, Parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh. This townland is in the northern part of the parish.
[6] Echinville aka Echlinville, parish of St. Andrews alias Ballyhalbert.
[7] Glassdrummond. This may be a townland in the parish of Kilclooney, Co. Armagh – but my hunch is that it is more likely to be be Glasdrumman in the parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh on the eastern border of Mounthill. Why? Because it is on the border of Mounthill and too many names overlap. More work is needed.
[8] Legaghory is in the parish of Shankill, Co. Armagh.
[9] Tullyvalley. I would guess that this might be Tullyvallen, Parish of Newtownhamilton. The thing that puzzles me is that I would have thought that the two would be contiguous.
[10] Lower Rock. This may be in the Parish of Mullaghbrack, Co, Armagh. This townland is on the northern border of Kilclooney.
[11] Mounthill, Parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh.
[12] In the 1854 Griffiths Valuation, an Edward HILL is shown to be in ownership of most of Mounthill. There are no longer any COULTERs associated with the townland.
[13] A Bridget and a PatrickConlon leased lands in Mounthill, parish of Creggan from Edward HILL according to the 1854 Griffiths Valuation.
[14] Moybrick, parish of Dromora, Co. Down.
[15] Munteneile. I haven’t a clue which townland this might be.
[16] Rover, parish of Kilmactranny, Co. Sligo. There are also the townlands of Rover Upper and Lower in the parish of Kilronan, Co. Roscommon. This is interesting given that there was a Nathanial COULTER (and this is not a common name) who was associated with the Parish of Creggan.
[17] Tullygally, Parish of Shankill, Co. Armagh
