Dear [J.W.?] McMahon
I've been to the old Graveyard of Kane[1] since I saw you. There are several tombs belonging to the Bailey family a list of which you'll find on the fourth page of the sheet. I could not find any Coulter. I am disposed to think that the John Bailey who is the last on the list is the one you want[2], and who died January 10, 1810. Very faithfully yours
John Turner[3]
Chas McMahon Esq[4].

[2] Why would he be “... the one you want”? Presumably they are looking for the father of Robert Ellis BAILIE (1775-1834). This would be Rev. John BAILIE (1806-1885).
[3] John TURNER I suspect he is: Rev. John Turner, Rector of Barronstown, and formerly Headmaster of the Dundalk Educational Institution, was a learned and successful educationalist, and raised the Institute to a very high level in the educational world. On his retirement he officiated at Killencoole, and also was Acting Military Chaplain at Dundalk Barracks, prior to his appointment to Barronstown. His eldest son, Mr. John Wm. Turner, M.A., is the efficient Agent here to Lord Roden; whilst his second son, Mr. Henry Turner, has been Resident Magistrate in the South for many years- Rev. John Turner died 1897. [4] Chas McMAHON Esq. Solicitor. His photo (or more likely, that of his father) is in Tempest Jubilee 1909 between pages 88-89. On page 97, his father’s biography gives more detail: Mr. Charles MacMahon, of Brookfield, Clerk of the Crown and Peace for the County of Louth, from the year 1869 to 1885. He was one of the leading solicitors of the County, until his official appointment necessitated his retirement from the profession. He was an eloquent advocate and sound lawyer, and enjoyed the confidence of his numerous clients. Mr. MacMahon succeeded to the office of Clerk of the Crown on the death of Mr. P. J. Byrne, in 1869; and at the retirement of Mr. Thomas Bourne in 1879 he was appointed also Clerk of the Peace. He was married to Miss Gartlan, sister of Peter M'Evoy Gartlan, and Mrs. John Gartlan. His eldest daughter was married to Mr. W. Russell, of Killough, a kinsman of Lord Russell of Killowen; and the second to the late Judge Mulholland brother-in-law to Lord Russell. His only son, Mr. Charles MacMahon, of Brookfield, succeeded him as Solicitor, and has since 1885 ably and successfully, practised his profession at his offices in Clanbrassil Street. He is married to Miss Ternan, of Drogheda, and has two children.
[5] John BAILIE. I am guessing that this may refer to the John BAILIE who was the father of Mary BAILIE who married Samuel COULTER (?-1851)
[6] Samuel COULTER. I am guessing that this may refer to the Samuel COULTER (?-1841) of Mounthill who was the father of the Samuel COULTER (?-1851) from Shortstone.
[7] John Cornwall BAILIE. I don’t know quite where he fits, but there is this: BAILIE In Memory of John Cornwall Bailie of Clonaleenan, Died Decr 29th 1889, Aged 43 Years. “Jesus said, Come unto me, and I will give you rest” also his wife Mary died Aug. 13 1924 aged 83 years. [8] Alicia BAILIE (1814-1880). Wife of the Rev. John BAILIE. Her maiden name is not yet known to me.
[9] Rev John BAILIE (1806-1885) son of Robert Ellis BAILIE & Margaret Unnamed.
[10] John BAILIE NOTE: I don’t know who this might be.
[11] Robert BAILIE NOTE: I don’t know who this might be.
[12] A. BAILIE. NOTE: I don’t know who this might be.
[13] John BAILIE NOTE: I don’t know who this might be.
[14] the Rev. Lord John De La Poer BERESFORD
[15] Samuel COULTER (?-1851) of Mount Hill parish of Creggan, son of Samuel Coulter. This is the Samuel COULTER who was murdered and left a wife and two young sons: John Bailie COULTER and Samuel COULTER.
[16] Mounthill. Parish of Creggan. NOTE: I need to follow up on PRONI MIC555/1 which includes various TIPPING leases.
[17] Samuel COULTER (?-1841). NOTE: I can’t yet place him, but there are several possibilities of connecting him to other COULTER lines in the area.
[18] Mary BAILIE of Shortstone, Parish of Roche, daughter of John Bailie. At present, I do not know where the John BAILIE who is her father fits in, but it is starting to look as if he may have been the Rev. John BAILIE (1806-1885) son of Robert Ellis BAILIE & Margaret Unnamed.
