Deeds
Registry of Deeds, Dublin
Grantors Index from 1708
PRONI Reference Mic
7

The notes in the table beneath were hastily scrawled during two part-day visits to the Deeds Registry in the spring of 2005 as well as during a five day stint in April 2006 and another in 2007 (when I was working under the influence of an acute respiratory infection – hence more errors, I suspect).. I lack legal training and as a consequence I may have omitted significant parts of any given memorial (these books contain “Memorials” of deeds, leases and marriage agreements and such – not the originals). There are remedies to my omissions. At very least you have a reference number that has a reasonable chance of being accurate (no promises made). Using this, you can order photocopies for yourself through the Deeds Registry for 15 Euro each. There are some that I will be ordering myself as I ran out of time and I will enter the data when I do (months from now!). Also, because of cost, I will have to be selective. Sharon Oddie Brown, April 21, 2006

PS. Not everything that is in the deed books shows up in the references. There are also surprises. For example, on page 187 of the Carlow townland Index #16, 1739-1810, there is a crude drawing of a man in uniform (tall flat-topped hat with a visor) who is facing a woman in a long dress. He has one leg up in a marching stance and an erect penis (the length of his thigh). In a speech bubble, above his head are the words, “How dare you, seeing I married you‌” She, an unnamed “Mrs.” replies, “So you did, you villein.”. I would guess that it dates to the late 1700s, early 1800s.

NOTES:
  1. If the entries under Book, Pg & Deed are blank, it means I have not found that reference. There may not be one, or I may have missed it.
  2. If the date shows a date range such as “1708-1729”, then it means that I have yet to consult this entry (otherwise I would have entered the exact date).
  3. If there is a townland name and a deed number but no family name indicated, then this also means that I have yet to look it up.
  4. In townland searches, I sometimes recorded other townland names because of geographical proximity or other such relevance. Serendipity.

NAME SEARCHES (many are not pertinent to my search, but are included as part of the process of elimination & may be helpful to others):
  1. ADAIR In 1721 a Sir Robert Adair leased to Wm OLIVER – try namebooks for ADAIR. Lease of Land of Dunfean in the Manor of Killhillstown alias Ballymena for 120 years Sir Robert Adair to William Oliver, weaver 1721. PRONI D/929/HA12/F2/1/93 Need to do.

  13. Most of the BREAKEY entries are courtesy of the work done by Ken BREAKEY of Portadown. I had already covered the date range of 1768-84 in my 2005 trip.
  14. BROWNE, Samuel (NOTE: lots of BROWNE @ Terlugan, Co. Tyrone & Aghentean, Co. Tyrone.)
  15. COULTER: I have searched so far:
    • 1708-29; 1730-45;
    • 1746-58; 1758-68;
    • 1768-76; 1777-85;
  16. Also look for MOURITZ – renewal 1803 Oct 30 by Robert Earl of Roden to Elizabeth MOURITZ (nèe COULTER) of Mount Balie.
  17. OLIVER:
  18. JACKSON, my search started with the BARONY of Idrone East; Townland of Raheenkyle; County Carlow (alternate spellings: Catherlogh, Catherlow). There are other deeds that were shared with me by Bill and Mary FARRELL both in correspondence and on their excellent JACKSON website. Otherwise, I was looking for the earliest instances of the JACKSON presence in Ireland and therefore searched:
  19. JOHNSTON-JACKSON (Liscalgot, Urker etc) Need to check. I have INDENTURE 9 April 1770
  20. OLAUGHLIN: 1794-99;
  21. MENARY & MENAGH: (There was MENAGH in Lurgen, but I don’t see a correlation with he name MENARY.) I did not search variant spellings such as “De La Minery” There were no instances of this name even though I searched
  22. My notes indicate a problem with Names Index 77. Regrettably, I didn’t note what it was. I suspect it was missing when I was looking for it.
  23. McCULLAGH 1709-1793
  24. PIPPARD 1708-1759 nothing relating to JACKSON (found them in Mountmellick searches)
  25. STEEL
  26. VANCE

TOWNLAND SEARCHES:
  1. ARMAGH:
  2. CARLOW: Looking for JACKSON & O’LAUGHLIN. Also check out Ratherogue, Co. Carlow.
  3. DROGHEDA TOWN Bk 52 1780-1810 I don’t know if I did this, or merely noted it.
  4. LEITRIM: Aghavilla (Ahavilla variant spelling). Curiously, there was no record of JACKSON where I might have expected to see the name – especially since I have evidence of connection there in the marriage settlement of David JACKSON with Eliza OLIVER.:
  5. MONAGHAN:
  6. QUEENS CO. Mountmellick & JACKSON search. NOTE: My notes (taken when I was sick as a dog in the 2007 trip) mention WESTENRA and “sometimes mention of malt house”.
