JACKSONs of Co Down
This tree has been patched together using the glue of at least half a dozen hunches. Each entry is no better than the source material that buttresses it. As with many JACKSON pedigrees, I would advise caution. As I learn more, I will improve on the level of verification and add sources as I learn of them.
There are also sites that specialize in the histories of both Stonewall JACKSON and President Andrew JACKSON. I have included some links to them beneath. These sites will do a more complete job of adding details to this part of the history. With respect to these two men, my aim has been focused more on the likelihood of their links back to various JACKSON lines in Ireland. This means that I have spent little attention to their consequent American and Canadian descendants. Also, there are others who have done that better than I ever could.
The main source material used in assembling this tree has come from:
1 Hugh Jackson b: in ,,,No. Ireland d: Abt. 1786 in ,,,No. Ireland
..... 2 Hugh Jackson
............. 3 [2] James Jackson b: Abt. 1780
................. +[1] Jane Jackson b: Abt. 1800 in ,,,PA
..... 2 James (Samuel?) Jackson
..... 2 Andrew Jackson b: Abt. 1730 in ,,,No. Ireland d: Abt. March 01, 1767 in Waxhaws
I have a Robert JACKSON at the start of this tree. This differs from versions of this tree cited in Burkes[1], in The Library of Congress and many of the Quaker JACKSON records. These other versions all allege that three brothers, sons of Sir Anthony JACKSON (1599-1666; a Church of England royalist), came to Ireland with Cromwell and were awarded land grants. According to these trees, the John JACKSON who was a son of Sir Anthony became a Presbyterian while his brothers Anthony JACKSON and Richard JACKSON became Quakers (although such trees usually acknowledge that there is no slam dunk proof that Anthony and Richard were even brothers). Over the past hundred years, there has been considerable doubt about the connection of Sir Anthony JACKSON to these three men and I will explore the history of that in a separate article. In the meantime, the way that the commonly accepted (and disputed even by me) version of how the JACKSONs of Killingswold morphed into the trees of various Quaker JACKSONs can be seen on my site: The Quaker JACKSONs.
This version on this page is also very different from the version outlined in The Ulster JACKSONs. D.J. McCarthy. Carrickfergus Borough Council, Belfast, 1997. I am not sure what to think about all this and would appreciate hearing from other researchers. Concerning this dilemma, it is worth looking at M’Lisa Whitney notes on The Ulster Jacksons - in particular: The main family line that this author uses to base his findings on has no proven link to the Andrew Jackson line. The link is based on 'oraltradition' - family stories.

If this turns out to be the ancestry of both Andrew JACKSON as well of Stonewall JACKSON, it would likely surprise no one that they seem to be an enterprising and mercantile family with roots in farming as well as a range of both local and export businesses. One thing that intrigues me is that John Spenser Bassett’s Life of Andrew Jackson published in 1911cites A memorandum preserved by Jackson amongst his papers which refers to relations at Ballynisca [Ballynaskeagh] and Bally Willy. Both these townlands figure in the land holdings and residences of the JACKSONs who follow.
There are three trees that Follow:
Descendants of Robert JACKSON
1 Robert JACKSON[2] b: “of the North Tyne Borders” d: probably in Parish of Dundonald, Co. Down [NOTE: I am not sure this is the correct Robert].
........ 2 John JACKSON[3] NOTE: Although many pedigrees have him b: 1624 in Eccleston, Lancashire, England this presumes that his father was Sir Anthony JACKSON. If he wasn’t, then I would suspect that an Ulster birth is more likely. d: 1679 in probably Co. Down
................... 3 James JACKSON[4] b: 1669 d: 25 Nov 1711 in of Newtown, Co. Down, Ireland
................... 3 John JACKSON[5] b: 1667 d: 1725 in of Ballyreagan[6], Parish of Dundonald, Co. Down. He married Katherine McKINNEY[7] of Dundalk Parish[8] d: 1727 in Ballyreagan, Parish of Dundonald, Co. Down
............................. 4 Joseph JACKSON[9] b: 1690 in Newtownards[10], Co. Down. d: in of Limavady, Co. Derry, Ireland. He married firstly Elizabeth VANCE[11] NOTE: Various sites suggest that Joseph married once, twice or three times. Since source are lacking, I am keeping it simple here – although a third wife being Lady Mary CARR[12] is credible and her child is included after the children of JACKSON and VANCE.

This is a second tree that was originally grafted on to the tree above. I had originally included Janet JACKSON[64] as a daughter of John JACKSON (1624-1679). I have no doubt that there is a familial relationship, (based on time and place) but I cannot be sure of the particulars. Her date of birth seemed out of line with the other siblings.
Descendants of John Jackson
1. John JACKSON[65] b: 1639 d: 16 Jun 1716 in of Ballyskeagh[66], Parish of Newtownards, Co. Down. He married Janet JACKSON[67] b. Abt 1641 d. Sept 1695. Going by his will - two of their three daughters married - one to a BROWN and one to a KENNEDY. I don’t know yet which ones married.

[1] The Killingswold connection is still cited in reference to the GREER-JACKSON line in: Sir Bernard Burke, Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Ireland, London, 1912. Elizabeth, only child of William Jackson (descended from Richard Jackson, of Killingwold Grove, near Beyerley, co. York. To this family the late Gen. [2] Robert JACKSON NOTE: In most genealogies, the John JACKSON who I am showing here as a son of this Robert JACKSON was linked as a brother of Anthony JACKSON and Richard JACKSON and all of them were alleged to be sons of Anthony JACKSON. If it turns out that this John JACKSON is a son of this Robert JACKSON, then we have a more credible explanation of who the Quaker JACKSONs may have been - if indeed they were his brothers.
· D.J. McCarthy, The Ulster Jacksons, Carrickfergus Borough Council, Belfast, 1997, 39, "Robert Jackson of the North Tyne Borders in 1606 settled at Loughgall, Co. Armagh. His older brother at Tandragee." NOTE: Much of this information in this book was based on a family recollections and I am not at all sure that we have the same Robert JACKSON here.
· One of the clues that lead me to choose Robert JACKSON to be connected to the ancestors that follow: DEED: 25-57-13497 1714 Dec 13: Between John JACKSON of Ballyreagan, Co. Of Dorone [Co. Down?] Gent. Of 1st part & Thomas JACKSON of same, Gent of the other part... refers to a 1 Nov 1677 deed between James ROSSE of the one pt. & the said John JACKSON lands of Ballyreagan formerly possessed by John DENHAM & all land of Ballyreagan formerly possessed by Robert JACKSON father of said John JACKSON, Parish Dundonald, Co. Dorone ... Thomas JACKSON. WITNESS James RATCLIFFE of Belfast, Co. Antrim, clothier; Andrew WALKER of Dundonald, Co. Down, yeoman; Richard LOWDER of Belfast, Gent. Thomas JACKSON [SEAL]. NOTE: I still need to read this entire deed to see if there are more clues to be found. The notes on it come from PRONI T808.
· PRONI, T808/8179 The mention of Robert JACKSON here is interesting: Chancery Bill 7 November 1677 Thomas AIKEN James CHALMERS and John ADAMS of Belfast town County Antrim merchants versus John BIGGER of Belfast town merchant lessee from Arthur late Earl of Donegal of premises in & near Belfast. Agnes BIGGER: John IRWIN; Francis NEWLAN; Robert JACKSON; John WILLIAMSON; and Alexander ARTHUR and John M`EWAN tenants and `cottiers the occupiers of said premises which are fully described in Bill etc. etc.) was born in Parish of Dundonald, Co. Down
[3] John JACKSON The following sources attach this John JACKSON as a son of Sir Anthony JACKSON. For that version see also my own Quaker JACKSONs tree.
· Katherine Hoagland, Family Origins, John JACKSON was born in 1624 in St. Michaels Par, Eccleston, Lancastershire, England. John Jackson, son of Anthony Jackson II, became the head of a long line of Jacksons which came to include Andrew Jackson, who gained fame in the Second War against England, 1812-1814, and later became the seventh President of the United States, and Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, who is remembered as one of the greatest Generals of the Civil War. (NOTE: There are no sources given for this and I question its accuracy),
· William Ross Cooper and Frances Jackson Baldwin, The Jackson Family Genealogy and History, “2, John (?) Name uncertain, born about 1624, joined the Presbyterian Church. John (?) Jackson, joined the established church of Scotland, the Presbyterian per old Quaker record stating that he was the ancestor of Pres. Andrew Jackson of the US. The name of his wife is unknown. His will mentions two sons and a daughter living at the time of the will was made, of whom the youngest son: ...,” NOTE: Much of the rest of this document as to the descendants of John JACKSON is reasonably accurate as near as I can tell. It is worth emphasising that the name "John" in this record was followed by a question mark.
· Jackson Mapp Perkins Brown Russell Young Brooks, # ID: I129 # Name: John Jackson # Sex: M # Birth: 1624 in St. Michael's Parish, Eccleston, Lancashire, England # Death: 1679 in probably County Down, Ireland # Religion: Anglican, then Presbyterian # Note: John and his brothers were granted confiscated Irish estates in 1648 and moved from Lancashire, England, to Ireland in 1649. While his brothers Anthony and Richard became Quakers, he became a Presbyterian.
· D.J. McCarthy, The Ulster Jacksons, Carrickfergus Borough Council, Belfast, 1997, p.39, John "Battle of the Boyne" JACKSON. The problem with this is that he was dead before the Battle of the Boyne, although it may have been his son. “...John Jackson, one of King William the Third’s personal bodyguard at the Battle of the Boyne, 1690.” [P 33 Quoted from Rev. H.W. Coffey, History of Milltown Parish.]

Partly due to the appearance of the American privateeres in our Chanel. The Government is very slow to give us any relief, our vesels for London, Bristol, etc., are still detained for want of a Convoy. We have a 74 Gunship and one or two of smaller note lying in the Bay for the past ten days which could have had our ships across the chanel in that time, but their orders were to cruise round Ireland. [28] Dr. John JACKSON NOTE: This is one of those links from America to Ireland where I would argue for extreme caution. Firstly, his birth date as given in some sources does not fit with the alleged parentage (see note beneath). Secondly, there is no mention in America of the medical training that he supposedly had. I am guessing that he might not turn out to be the same John JACKSON who was the great grandfather of Stonewall JACKSON although I am keeping him here until I learn more.
· NOTE, He was one of the sons mentioned in his father's will as being married.
· NOTE: two totally different dates for his birth and death are given in various sources:

o 1715-1801 Jackson Mapp Perkins Brown Russell Young Brooks, This source has a birth date of 1715, which would have meant that he was ten years old at the time of his father's death. This does not square with the will of his father which shows him being married at the time of his father's death. Thanks to Dee Brown for pointing this out on Genforum July 5, 2010.

As per her own statement, given to her grandson John George Jackson, Elizabeth arrived in America when she was 19 or 20. Arriving in the new country in 1748/49 would make her born on 8 January 1728/29. She died in Clarksburg, (West) Virginia in 1825. - Linda B. [29] Elizabeth CUMMINGS
· JACKSON Brigade Inc. Genealogical Association for Descendants of John Jackson (1715-1801), "Elizabeth Cummins was a strong-willed Englishwoman from London. She was raised by a maiden aunt, who upon her death left Elizabeth one thousand pounds sterling. She set off to America with her inheritance, met and married John Jackson in Cecil County, Maryland. (The legend that she fled England after throwing a tankard of ale at a King's soldier in her aunt's tavern is a little more exciting, but has been fairly well proven to be fanciful.) She is described as being rather masculine in stature, quite intelligent, and as having a great deal of courage and strong character. She fought off Indian attacks and patented 3,000 acres of land in her own name and paid for them herself." [N3] Elizabeth Cummins is considered a Patriot of the American Revolution by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D. A. R.) as she, while her husband and sons were away, fought at Jackson's Fort. [N4] Jackson's Fort has a nice ring to it, however, as pointed out by McWhorter, "Jackson's Fort [and others] were probably only strategic and strongly built dwellings or block houses, where the immediate inhabitants fled on occasion of sudden alarms, and where scouts had regular places of meeting." [N5] "There was a block house about three miles west of Bush's Fort, on Fink's Run .... It was built by some of the Jacksons on land now [1915] owned by Mr. Martin Reger. Prof. Maxwell refers to this building as "Jackson's Fort." History of Randolph County, West Va, p. 414. It could hardly be termed a fort, in the sense of that word. It was only a block house, or a strongly built two-story log dwelling without a palisade; and never figured as a defensive stronghold." [N6]

[64]Janet JACKSON. NOTE: I had her as the daughter of a John JACKSON (1624-1679) of Ballyreagan and I believe that was incorrect. Her date of birth is so much earlier than that of her siblings - plus their father John JACKSON (1624-1679) would have been only age 17 at the time of her birth. The confusion happened because of a reference in the deed of James JACKSON Feb 18, 1711 where he refers to his nephew Gilbert JACKSON, son of John JACKSON of Ballykeagh. I had then supposed that the wife of said John JACKSON would also be a JACKSON. Possibly not. So it may be that I even have her surname incorrect.

· The NICHOLSON family had a long presence at Ballow aka Balloo in the Parish of Bangor as did another line of her ancestors, the BLACKWOODs. This marriage indicates that the JACKSONs of this family line were quite prosperous.
· Monumental Remains of Old Abbey Church Of Bangor., Ulster Journal of Archaeology, Adjoining the little gate opening into the south side of the graveyard is a flat stone, with the following very curious inscription, composed by the deceased, Susanna Nicholson, some years prior to her death :
Susanna Jacksons

Christ is the true God
And that three are
One he doth record
