Leases of land in Dublin with known connections to JACKSONs of Coleraine
The earliest memorials of leases of land in Dublin connected to the JACKSONs of Coleraine involved Samuel JACKSON (1641-1706). He was related to most if not all of the JACKSONs mentioned in the leases in the table beneath. Bit by bit, I am entering this data into my Rootsweb version of the family tree.
· By the time of Samuel JACKSON’s death in 1706, it was clear that he had become a successful builder and property developer with extensive holdings in counties Meath, Dublin, Cavan, and Monaghan as well as in Yorkshire. SOURCE: Will of Samuel JACKSON (1641-1704). He also owned property at Clifford in Yorkshire. The properties in Dublin - Young Cashall & Fishamble St. House in King St. had been bought from William Robert THORNTON.
· His older brothers – William, Thomas & John - were also successful merchants and politicians and were based in Coleraine with additional residences in Dublin.
· He and a number of his relations all served as Representatives of the Irish House of Commons, He was the a Member of Parliament representing Coleraine, Londonderry in the Irish House of Commons from 1695-1703.
· In 1703, he bought lands in Ballinclea, Parish of Kill-of-the-Grange. His niece Abigail BUCKLEY née JACKSON als CROFTEN would live there after 1737.
· At the time of his death, he was living with a nephew, Richard JACKSON (1673-1730) in a house on Mary Lane, Dublin. That nephew was likely between marriages, his first wife having died in 1698. His sister-in-law Margret MITCHELBURN née BERESFORD, widow of Samuel’s brother William JACKSON, also lived there. SOURCE: Pue’s Impartial Occurrences, Foreign and Domestic [a Dublin Newspaper – in the uncatalogued newspapers in the Irish Museum: December 26, 1704 - February 9, 1706] Tues. 15-19 Jan 1706. ... This morning Sam Jackson Esq.died, 'tis said he was worth £30,000 which he left to his two nephews. About half an hour after, Madam Mitchelburn, sister to the said Jackson, died in the same house
· 1688 Dec 11. This letter may be from him: Samuel Jackson, Dublin, to Sir Albert Conyngham, Mount Charles House, Strabane, about Capt. Hamilton's affairs.'... We have been in great consternation here about a letter which I presume you must have heard of, wherein it was said that on the 7th instant the Protestants was [sic] to be cut off; which alarm hath caused I believe 2000 [?] people to go for England. But,God be thanked, now people begin to come into their right wits again. For my part, I never believed anything of that report, and I do not doubt but in a little time all things in England will come to a good accommodation. ...' SOURCE: PRONI T2825/C/47/2.
Other connections of possible interest:
· John SHAW was present as a witness in ROD: 8-59-1771. A John SHAW was mentioned as one of the lives attached to several deeds concerning Robert JACKSON of Crooked Staff.
· The mention of the parish of Kiltegan, Co. Carlow in ROD 114-44-77924 is intriguing. I have a tree of JACKSONs based in Kiltegan.
· There may or may not be a connection with the JACKSONs of Pimlico who held lands at St. Mary’s Lane and elsewhere nearby at this time. Michael JACKSON was a clothier, and the names of his sons echo those of the JACKSONs associated with Coleraine who had come from Kirkby Lonsdale in Westmorland.
· Pill Lane:
o This was where Henry JACKSON (1750-1817) of United Irishman fame conducted his trade as a merchant and owner of a foundry in the late 1700s. It is just a block away from the corner of Phapper & St. Mary’s Lane where the Coleraine JACKSONs held leases in the early 1700s. It also intersects with Church Street.
o Land at Pill Lane was leased as early as 1725 by a Henry JACKSON. SEE: ROD: 45-189-28982.
o In 1736, a Henry JACKSON, cordwainer, leased land on the north side of Pill Lane. ROD: 85-279-6029. There are several other deeds involving a Henry JACKSON, cordwainer in this time frame. More work is needed here to tease out the inter-relationships.
o The reason this convergence of Henry JACKSONs may be of interest is because the father of the Henry JACKSON (?-bet 1778-1796) of Lisnabo, Co. Meath has never been identified. That Henry JACKSON was a grandfather of the United Irishman Henry JACKSON (1750-1817) and the ancestor of the feisty JACKSONs of Ballybay. See: Jacksons of Lisnabo.
