Timeline of JACKSONS re Steeple

These are names of JACKSONs who I suspect are likely linked to Steeple.

·       Many of them had lands in Steeple, Holywell & the town of Antrim – all very close together, as well as Loonburn which is a bit further east, but still in the Co. of Antrim.

·       I have included records from the Church of Ireland parish lists at PRONI MIC583/11 as well as the earlier of the Presbyterian records of JACKSONs from First Millrow, Antrim. NOTE: The latter were transcribed by Pauline Loughran. In hindsight, I am unsure whether I noted their source correctly. I will check to see if she has a record. They are looking suspiciously like Church of Ireland records to me, although the dates are earlier than any records that I have been able to find so far.

·       It would likely be helpful to check records of neighbouring parishes. I may not have time to do this.

·       PRONI D2489/8 1734-1934 Three boxes of documents relating to the Clarke family, The Steeple, Antrim, Co. Antrim, and the related Jackson family, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim. The documents include miscellaneous leases, title deeds, correspondence, marriage settlements, receipts for stocks and shares, income tax returns, insurance policies and material relating to the Irish Land Commission concerning the land of the Clarke and Jackson families in Antrim. There are also wills of George Jackson, The Steeple, Antrim, 12 Oct. 1734; James Jackson, Loonburn, Co. Antrim, 18 Sep. 1770; Amy Jackson, The Steeple, Antrim, 4 July 1775; Thomas Mercer, Gloucester Street, Dublin, 23 Sep. 1800; and James Clarke, Ballymena, Co. Antrim, 24 July 1810.

Here is at least one of the likely links between the CLARKE and JACKSON of Steeple families, and may lead to a clue about why the lands of Steeple passed from JACKSON to CLARKE. NOTE: A Jackson CLARKE of Upperlands family was already born in 1695 – so there had to be earlier links. His father was John CLARKE b 1665. NOTE: A possibility is that Ellenor CLARKE was a daughter of Peter JACKSON & Elinor.

At an Election held at Carrick in & for the County of Antrim the 30th day of May 1776, before Ezekiel Davys Boyd Esqr. high sheriff of said County, by virtue of his Majesty's Writt issued out of the High Court of Chancery in Ireland bearing date the first day of May instant, for the Chusing & electing two Knights to represent the said County of Antrim in a Parliament to be holden in Dublin the Eleventh day of June next. Beaufort Journal.  PRONI MIC250/1 1787-1788  NOTE: Mention of JACKSONs near Steeple, Co. Antrim  Near Antrim saw, close to Mr Jackson's at Steeple, a round tower with four windows at top and a pointed cone roof, as usual, but with more large windows than common. I was told by a man in Antrim that the entrance is on the ground and that there is some way of climbing up in it and that there was once a great burial ground about it.

… last will and Testament of Peter Jackson of Steeple in the Parish of Antrim… deceased was proved …on the twenty-seventh day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two 1792.. granted to Ann Jackson widow of the said deceased.

There was a 2nd copy:

In the Name of God, Amen, I, Peter Jackson of Steeple in the parish of county Antrim… last will and testament.. I leave to my dear wife Anne Jackson twenty pounds sterling to buy morning or what she thinks proper. In the name of God, Amen, I George Jackson of Steeple in the parish and county of Antrim…First I confirm to my dear mother Anne Jackson the provision made for her by the will of my father Peter Jackson, deceased… I bequeath to my said Mother in addition [?] the sum of forty pounds sterling paid to her yearly and every year out of the Lands of Steeple and King’s [?] in the town of Antrim… I give and bequeath to Mrs. Elinor Blair the house wherin she now resides and the sum of thirty pounds sterling payable to her yearly and every year on of the Lands of Steeple and King’s tenement… I order and direct  & my Will is that her daughters Armanilla and Catherine Blair shall have and receive the annuity of thirty pounds… I give and bequeath to my good friend Jackson Clark of Massareen and his heirs forever my Estate Right and Title  and Interest in and to the tenement called Lindsay’s… other bequests… friend William Clark brother of Jackson Clark… rents… after his death first son of William Clark… William Clark sole executor. 14 January 1797. NOTE: The date of 14 February 1798 written on the document likely represents the date of probate. He is leaving the annuity to his cousins, daughters of his aunt Elinor JACKSON. I suspect he never married.
