Bethams Abstracts GORE
Bentham’s Genealogical Abstracts. Sir William Betham (1779-1853) was appointed deputy Ulster King of Arms in 1807 and Ulster King of Arms in 1820. Betham spent a lifetime collating indexes and abstracts of the manuscripts held in the Record Tower of Dublin Castle. Although Betham was a polymath, it is his work in the Records Tower for which Irish genealogists and family historians are most grateful. |
My purpose in compiling this selection of notes on GOREs was to better understand the family connections between GOREs, SALEs (aka SALLs) and JACKSONs – specifically Rev. William JACKSON (abt 1737-1795) of Dublin. His mother was an unnamed GORE with relations in Co. Sligo. Rev. William JACKSON was the (in)famous member of the United Irishmen who died in the Court while awaiting sentencing. He had deliberately taken poison in order to die before sentence was passed, and thereby save the rights to his estate for the benefit of his pregnant wife. NOTE: There are close to 500 records of GOREs noted by Bentham. In this particular search, I focused on the names of the women.
This shading indicates references that I want to follow up on. |
Other sources:
NOTE: In 1627, there was an apprenticeship for 7 years of a Francis JACKSON to William GORE, Company of Drapers. The father of Francis was William JACKSON, mercer, deceased, of Kirby-Lonsdale, Westmorland. A bond value was posted by Richard JACKSON and Mary JACKSON of 300 pounds. Unless there are two William JACKSON son mercers in Kirby Lonsdale, he is the same. (Richard was likely his older brother, and Mary was likely his mother.)
NOTE: I do not know whether the draper William GORE was the William GORE Esq. of Woodford, Co. Leitrim who married Catherine Newcomen. That GORE family of Ireland also had a business base in London.

He established the manor of Gethinsgrott, barony of Fermoy, in county Cork. The Gethin family later acquired extensive lands in the south eastern part of County Sligo as well as property in Sligo town. They also leased property from other estates notably the Gore Booths. Could John SALE be also known as John SALL? There was an aunt of Rev William JACKSON (1737-1794) who was a widow of Dr. SALL. She was named in a contemporaneous news article as a sister of the unnamed GORE who was a mother of Rev. William JACKSON. NOTE: This is a puzzle. Some sources have Tyffin GORE as a son of a Francis GORE and an unnamed TYFFIN. This Francis GORE was a son of Sir Francis GORE M.P. & Lady Anne PARKE of Sligo. Other sources have Elizabeth SALE as the wife of Collo Francis GORE aka Brig Gen Francis GORE of Clonmel, Co. Clare. Also: Finn’s Leinster Journal 1770. Births Marriages Deaths. H.F.
