BITS AND PIECES
[1] John CLARKE · CLARKS OF MAGHERA HOUSE, now Largantogher, Co. Derry... The first of the family to settle in Ulster was John Clark, who came from Lancashire. In 1690, he took a lease of the lands of Fortna Clark and Longfield from the Draper's Company, and a few later acquired by purchase from Montgomery of Grey Abbey the estate of Maghera (now Larantogher [Largantogher, Parish Maghera, Barony Loughinsholin]), where the family have resided ever since. He married Jane, sister of the Rev. Fulke White, first Presbyterian Minister of Broughshane [Broughshane Lower and/or Broughshane Upper, Parish of Racavan, in the Barony of Antrim Lower] Co. Antrim, and ancestor of the famous Field-Marshall Sir George White, V.C. of Whitehall, Co. Antrim (see No. 224 Rev Fulke White). Their son Jackson Clark, born 1695, was admitted a freeman of Derry, and died in 1756. The name of Jackson, since so generally adopted by the family as almost to make a hyphenated surname, seems to indicate a relationship with the Jacksons of Jackson Hall, Coleraine. At all events, Ensign Thomas Jackson, one of Derry's defenders, was a near neighbour of theirs at Tobermore (see: No. 140)..... Fighters of Derry: Their Deeds and Descendants, Being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland During the Revolutionary Period, 1688-91 W.R. Young, (London, 1932). SOURCE: FindaGrave. · Alexandria Gazette, Volume 96, Number 42, 18 February 1895. Death of Mrs. Law. - Mrs. Louisa Douglas Law, widow of the late Major James O. Law, of Baltimore, and sister of Mr. James S. Douglass of this city, died yesterday at her residence in Baltimore, aged eighty-two years. Funeral will take place Tuesday from her late residence. Mrs. Law was the daughter of the late James Douglas, of this city and a granddaughter of Jackson Douglas, of Newton, Limavaddy, County Derry, Ireland, who was an IRISH REBEL against England in the REBELLION of 1798, in which *Robert Emmet fought and for which he was hanged. Mr. Douglas, with his family, had to FLEE to this country to escape, perhaps a similar fate. His granddaughter, Miss Louisa Douglas, was married to Major James Owen Law, [Mayor of Baltimore] HER COUSIN, on January 21, 1836, just fifty-nine years ago, and her husband died on June 6, 1847, forty-eight years ago, after eleven years of happily married life, so Mrs. Law has, therefore, rounded out a half-century of widowhood. For nearly a quarter of a century, Mrs. Law had resided with her eldest daughter, Mrs. SPEAR, the wife of James Otis Spear, living a quiet and devoted life surrounded by her two daughters, Mrs. Spear [Elizabeth Davies Law] and Miss Maggie Law, and her grandchildren.
