NOTE: This report was prepared for this web page by Wendy Jack.
I have decided to include a few names of people who may still be living. In one such case there is someone who would like to connect with this person
in order to pass on some family memorabilia. If I am contacted, I will facilitate the connection. If any living person sees information about themselves in here
that they would wish to see removed, I shall do so ASAP.

[224] His enlistment papers describe David as being 5 ft 5½ ins tall, with fair hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion.

In a letter dated 17 January 1917, Mary Griffin wrote: David Bates is in the Trenches just now.  It will be very hard on him.  He was such a pampered boy but if he lives it will make a man of him. [225] Unfortunately, this was not to be. David died 14 September 1917 in France. [226]   He was buried at Beehive Cemetery in Willerval, Pas de Calais, France. [227]
