OLIVERs of Farmacaffley, Ennislare, Ballyrea, Killynure, Brootally and elsewhere. This tree includes the five earliest generations of OLIVERs known to have resided in Co. Armagh who are directly connected to my family line.

Sharon Oddie Brown. July 27, 2017
Update August 1, 2017 A closer look at the 1738 Feb 6 deed resulted in Elizabeth Maria OLIVER being removed as a child of Benjamin OLIVER and added as a child of William OLIVER & Elizabeth HARDY. Also, Andrew OLIVER was added as a child of William OLIVER & Elizabeth HARDY.
Update August 5, 2017. Several additions incl: Isabella OLIVER (1802-1816); Andrew OLIVER d 1770 notes; Sarah OLIVER & Charles NORRIS.

NOTES:

·       The names that are shaded indicate my direct line.

·       In the same time frame that the William OLIVER & Elizabeth HARDY (who are at the start of this tree) had children baptised at 1st Armagh Presbyterian, there was also a Benjamin OLIVER who had a son William baptised: 1727 June 28th. I suspect that he was a brother of the William OLIVER who married Elizabeth HARDY. I have added him to the tree on the basis of a hunch. In addition, there was also a Thomas OLIVER who had a daughter, Rachel OLIVER baptised 1713 September 20th. Based on naming patterns, this is a less likely, but not impossible relation of the first generation in this tree.

·       Another possible relation is the Hugh OLIVER who married Jane PARKE 1707 Jan 6 at 1st Armagh Presbyterian, and in 1798 Dec 12 Hugh OLIVER had a son named David OLIVER christened at 1st Armagh Presbyterian. William OLIVER also had a son named David.

·       I am beginning to suspect that two brothers settled in the Parishes of Armagh & Lisnadill.

·       In the 2nd generation of this tree, the brothers David Joseph & William OLIVER are well recorded because of legal issues surrounding the mills at Laragh.

·       In the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations, the relationships are reasonably well nailed down, except where noted.

1 William OLIVER b: Bef 1700 d: Aft 1730 of Ballynahone, Co. Armagh NOTE: He may also have been "of Lislooney"

+ Elizabeth HARDY b: Abt 1700 of Drumadd, Parish of Armagh. d: Aft 1730 NOTE: the name of the townland that Elizabeth HARDY came from is not entirely clear in Eliza JACKSON’s notes, and it could be read as Drummuck, Parish of Creggan, except for the fact that the HARDY family are mentioned in other records relating to Drumadd in this time frame.

2 Andrew OLIVER d. aft 1738 NOTE: He was mentioned as a life in a 1738 Feb 6 deed. Occupation: Chandler.

3 Sarah OLIVER. WARNING: Her placement here is based only on a hunch. See 1750 Oct 22 marriage to Charles NORRIS.

4 John MCCULLAGH b: Bef 1816 of Kearney Hill, Co. Armagh

        3 Elizabeth OLIVER b: Abt 1760

+ William VANCE b: Abt 1767 from “Castle Cawfield”, Co. Tyrone  m: 01 May 1803 in First Presbyterian, City of Armagh NOTE: This is interesting because of other VANCE-OLIVER marriages in another line of OLIVERs.

3 William OLIVER b: Abt 1765 of Ennislare d: 1854 in Brootally, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh

+ Janet MCCULLAGH d: Bet 1818 and 1828 She married before 1818. NOTE: Even though Eliza JACKSON née OLIVER wrote (sometime before 1900) that they had no children, it is possible that they had children. There is an entry in the St. Marks Registries of a William OLIVER and a Jane having a son James born April 14, 1812. This is an OLIVER birth that we have not been able to place.

+ Elizabeth BALLYNTINE b: Abt. 1805 in Bellaghy, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh  m: Bef. 1828 NOTE: This marriage has been placed here based on a hunch. It is a weak hunch since the relationship was not mentioned by Eliza JACKSON née OLIVER (not that she got all of it right).

4 William OLIVER b: 27 Jul 1828 d: Aft 1892 NOTE: I am unsure about some of his relationships. It seems that he resided at Killynure, likely on the eastern border of the townland, not where the William OLIVER, son of Benjamin OLIVER and Elizabeth BRADFORD had lived. He also may have fathered children with a Margaret OLIVER of the townland of Enagh.

              + Mary Anne MALLON b: 1822 d: 24 Jan 1892 NOTE: She had a will.

5 Benjamin OLIVER b: 21 Aug 1841 NOTE: He was born out of wedlock to a Catholic mother and a Protestant father.

5 Sarah OLIVER b: 31 Aug 1844 NOTE: She was born out of wedlock to a Catholic mother and a Protestant father.

3 Benjamin OLIVER b: Abt 1765 He may have been born at Farmacaffley, and then given a lease in Ennislare by his father. He relocated to Killynure sometime before his marriage which was about 1806. d: 1 Jul 1831 Killynure, Co. Armagh

          + Elizabeth BRADFORD b: 1785 d: 12 Jul 1825

4 William OLIVER b: Abt 1810 of Killynure, Co. Armagh d: 15 Oct 1873 Killynure, Co. Armagh

4 Thomas OLIVER b: Abt 1813 of Killynure, Co. Armagh d: 4 May 1867 Killynure, Co. Armagh

4 James OLIVER b: Bet 1815 and 1825 of Ennislare, Co. Armagh d: 1853 in Brootally, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh NOTE: Having him be the James OLIVER of Brootally is a hunch – based on deeds work. He was not mentioned in his father’s will, and could have died before 1825.

4 Elizabeth OLIVER b: 10 Apr 1815 Probably Killinure, Co. Armagh d: 23 Oct 1903 Urker Lodge, Urker, Parish of Creggan, Co. Armagh NOTE: Although she was buried at Creggan, her gravemarker is at Creggan.

              + David JACKSON b: 4 Feb 1814 d: 11 Nov 1889

                5 John JACKSON b: 28 Nov 1839 d: 21 Jul 1886

                  + Kate Maria Jane WHITING b: 24 Sep 1854 d: Aft 1901

                5 Thomas JACKSON b: 4 Jun 1841 d: 21 Dec 1915

              + Mary Jane HAYES b: Abt 1819 d: Bef Mar 1843

                   5 Benjamin OLIVER b: 1842 d: 21 Sep 1905

                  + Grace ORR

+Anne HANNA b: Abt. 1822 in of Terraskane, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh d: 29 Mar 1891 in Ballyscandle, Parish of Eglish, Co. Armagh m: 22 Mar 1843 in Eglish Parish, Co. Armagh

5 Barbara OLIVER b: Bet 1844 and 1876 Co. Armagh. d: Bef 1877. Died in infancy

5 Martha Eliza OLIVER b: Abt 1844 Co. Armagh d: 26 Nov 1872 Queensland, Australia.

                     + George NORRIS b: 1837

5 William H. OLIVER b: Bef 1848 d: 17 Apr 1867. NOTE: He is recorded on the family grave marker in Lislea, but based on the fact of an identical death date for a William Oliver, was buried at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served as William H. Oliver, Private, Company A, 1st Regiment, Kansas Infantry, Union. His death in April 18. 1867, would have been two years after the end of the Civil War. His rank as private would have been before 1865.

5 Mary Jane OLIVER b: 22 Apr 1848 Brootally, Parish of Derrynoose, Co. Armagh d: Abt 1848 Co. Armagh. Died in infancy – probably at Brootally.

                   5 Margaret OLIVER b: 1853 d: 14 Apr 1881

                   5 Andrew Coulter Bradford OLIVER b: 1859 d: 14 Jun 1899

4 Henry OLIVER b: Bet 1818 and 1821 d: Bet 1818 and 1821 Elizas notes say he died as an infant.

4 Mary Jane OLIVER b: 1821 d: 3 Oct 1875 Ballybay, Co. Monaghan (although she resided at Cavananore, Co. Louth)

        3 James OLIVER b: 1769 d: 31 Oct 1852

4 John OLIVER b: Abt 1810 NOTE: He is a possibility as the John OLIVER who was the father of John OLIVER (1841-1909) husband of Margaret ROCK (abt 1837-1905) of Ballycrummy. DNA evidence indicates a close link, as do issues over inheritances.

3 Frances OLIVER b: Bef 1770 d: Bef 14 Jan 1837 of Enagh, Parish of Lisnadill, Co. Armagh. She left a will, but we only have the probate outline. NOTE: There are other OLIVERs at Enagh in the years that follow, which could indicate that one of her brothers had a child or children that we have not yet found any documentation for.

3 Andrew OLIVER b: Abt 1770 NOTE: He is placed here based on a hunch. A Rev William Quigley wrote to Maria Beattie in 2005 with some notes from Drumsallan Church, Parish of Eglish. In the marriage registers, he found: Andrew Oliver of Brookley [sic-  Broottally] married Anne Hanna of Tereskane [Rev. Quigley note: between Drumsallan and Armagh but in Eglish Parish] on 22 March 1804. The main thing that gives me pause about his placement here in the tree – and it is significant - is that he was not included in the grave marker for Benjamin OLIVER as other siblings are.

          + Anne HANNA b: Abt 1780
