Declaration by the Commissioners for the settling and securing the Province of Ulster; dated at Carrickfergus, the 23rd of May, 1653. NOTE: The 1653 policy, which originated in Dublin – not London, to transport Scots from Antrim and Down was directed at close to 300 Presbyterians. Many of them had identified with the Royalists instead of the Cromwellians. This preceded the policy to transport Catholics to Connaught. There are two versions of this list, so I have compared them to make sure that I do not miss anyone ( I have not seen the original - these are both from secondary sources).

1653 Presbyterian removals - Comparing two lists

NOTE: I have used red fonts for surnames that appear in both lists but with differences in spelling. Many of the differences are minor, but good to know about when doing digital searches. Where the both the forename and surname do not appear in both lists, it is also indicated in red.

I have bolded names that I want to focus on. I am very interested in Captain JACKSON (no forename was included) of Shanes Castle, Largy & Toome Quarters because of Shane’s Castle proximity to Steeple and hence to the Jacksons of Steeple & Loonburn & Islandmagee - Antrim. Also, the JACKSONs of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland and Coleraine, Londonderry married into the O’NEILLs of Shanes Castle. It is also of interest that an Edmond JACKSON was granted land in Kilkenny, Province of Leinster sometime before 1667. Perhaps he was one of those who was transported from either Co. Antrim or Co. Down.

This list has the potential to be helpful in tracing families that one might have thought were in Co. Down and/or Antrim in the mid-1600s but who seemed to have evapourated.

: Some places and names were listed twice in this version – in different sections of the lists.
