This is a work in progress. I am trying to situate the JACKSONs who show up in Griffiths as either lessors or lessees in Co. Carlow. My two main sources were:

JACKSONs who show up in Griffiths Valuation in Co. Carlow

PRONI T808 includes a collection of JACKSON related records collected as part of the Groves Manuscripts. Of particular interest when it comes to Co. Carlow is the mention of the following deeds: 1834 May 1 and 1834 May 2

[1] Adam JACKSON. I may be wrong, but I believe that the Adam JACKSON mentioned here is the same one mentioned in other Carlow holdings. I believe him to be the Adam JACKSON b: 1785  d: 20 Sep 1858 of Graigue, Queens Co., Ireland Married: Bridget Jackson. He was the son of Michael & Rebecca JACKSON and brother of Frances JACKSON. He may also have been a brother of William (1783-1846) and Robert (1740-1803). NOTE: There is also a reference to participation as a 2nd Lt in the Cloydagh Infantry.

[2] William JACKSON. Going by the size of his house, he is of the same social standing as Adam JACKSON. He may be a brother and be the William JACKSON(1783-1846)  of Graigue, Queens Co. This is inferred from Carlow BMD records which show them both to be “of Graigue”.

[3] Andrew W. JACKSON. Again, a house similar in value to both Adam and William. I do not know who he was. Since there is a family tradition in one of the JACKSON lines that there was a WALKER family connection, it may be that his full name was: Andrew Walker JACKSON.

[4] Edward JACKSON. There are a number of families in Co. Carlow who name their sons “Edward JACKSON”. The earliest use of the name that I found so far is the son of Roger JACKSON whose son Edward died in 1703. There are no slam dunks for this name so far.

[5] Thomas JACKSON, a merchant in Dublin. It would seem that he was the same one who held other leases in Co. Carlow.

LECKY to  JACKSON Registered the 21st of January 1723 at 4 a clock in the afternoon.

  • http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/1723JACKSONtoLECKY.html NOTES: James LECKY of Kilknock in the county of Coloro [CARLOW] Gent of the one part & Thomas  JACKSON of the City of Dublin Merchant of the other part reciting that Walter BAGNELL of the parish of St James within the liberty of Westminster Esq …  lands of Ratherogue with the appertinances  in the County of Catherlogh [CARLOW]  for the term of four hundred and ninety years … Ralph CRUTCHLY …  in the presence of John WILLIAMS of the City of Dublin Gent. One of the Applys [Applicants?] at the Court of Common Leases and Robt.DENT of the said city Gent his clerk NOTE: Rathcrogue Townland was 422 acres in Co. Carlow, Barony Carlow, Parish Tullowmagimma, PLU Carlow, Province, Leinster.
  • DEED: 8-59-1771.1710 Jan 22 JACKSON, Thomas City of Dublin. Lease of properties in By & Co Carlow, 41 years after the termination of the lease dated 8 Jun 1696 from Sir Richard STEPHENS late of Lincolns Inn to Benjamin BUNBURY late of Killerick, Co. Carlow, which will be 25 Mar 1716, £200 pa. Mention of Richard JACKSON. Will.

[6] Thomas JACKSON. I have no idea where he might fit.

[7] Henry JACKSON

[8] Elizabeth JACKSON

[9] Susan JACKSON. There are a couple of possibilities known to me. She could be Susanna JACKSON née WEEKS or Susannah JACKSON née DOCKALL (wife of Peter)

[10] George JACKSON of Hoare’s Lane Tullow Town.

[11] Benjamin JACKSON. There was a Benjamin JACKSON (1764-1849) of Leney. I do not know if there was any connection, nor do I know where “Leney” was.

[12] Eagle Hill. There are a few connections of interest with respect to the JACKSONs and Eagle Hill.

  • BURTON, Benjamin-WHITESIDE. Deed: 45-131-28352. 1724, March 30. The lands of Eagle Hill next to Hacketstown. Lands likely held by Roland DAVIES for the use of Aaron DAVIES - bounded by lands held by Wm COLEMAN & Joseph PARKER, George PARKER, also lands of Widow TAYLOR of Robert PRESLY, commonly called Henry TAYLOR - lots more in the deed, but no mention of JACKSONs. NOTE: In the Jacksons of Santry family tree, there is a marriage of a Grace JACKSON to an Unnamed DAVIS.
  • DAVID-DAVIS Deed: 71-504-50439. Rowland DAVIES of Hacketson, Co. Carlow Gent & John CHANCE of Baltinglass Co., Wicklow (marriage of Wm DAVIES & Jane CHANCE).
  • BURTON-DAVIES Deed: 77-147-53422.1708-1738
  • DEED 1833 mentions Henry JACKSON jr. of Hacketstown “eldest son & heir at law of Thomas JACKSON of Coolmana, Co. Carlow”
  • A John KEALY is listed. I wonder if this might have been John KELLY, father of James KELLY who married Susan JACKSON, daughter of Joseph JACKSON.

[13] Susannah JACKSON. There are a couple of possibilities known to me. She could be Susanna JACKSON née WEEKS or Susannah JACKSON née DOCKALL (wife of Peter)

[14] John JACKSON

[15] Joseph JACKSON. He is possibly linked to the JACKSONs mentioned in the Deeds of 1834.

[16] Benjamin JACKSON

[17] Samuel JACKSON. Since the acreage of 38 acres matches the mention in PRONI T808, I assume it is the same piece of land: 38 acres leased 1788 by Estyer [Esther?] JACKSON to Thomas JACKSON bounded by River Dereen & Samuel & Joseph JACKSON. If so, this would make him an son of Joseph & Rachel JACKSON, deceased by 1834.

[18] Henry JACKSON I suspect that he was the Henry JACKSON jr. mentioned in the 1834 leases. The acreages and valuations mentioned in Griffiths are low, but the presence of a forge may be a useful clue to follow. A Henry JACKSON shows up in the Carlow BMD records a few times as a witness for residents of Coolmana, but not in any other way.

[19] Joseph JACKSON. One possibility is that the was the Joseph JACKSON of Rathvilly who married Elizabeth HUGHES in 1823.

[20] William JACKSON

[21] Thomas JACKSON. At present my best guess is that he was a son of John JACKSON and Sarah JACKSON née JACKSON. See his mention in Williamstown land mentions.

[22] Peter JACKSON. At present my best guess is that he was a son of John JACKSON and Sarah JACKSON née JACKSON. His wife was Susan DOCKALL

[23] John JACKSON

[24] Joseph JACKSON

[25] Ann JACKSON

[26] William, Robert & John JACKSON. Presumably brothers. They may have been sons of Michael JACKSON. The lease from BUNBURY may be significant since a Rose JACKSON married Thomas BUNBURY.

[27] Elizabeth JACKSON

[28] James JACKSON

[29] Rachel JACKSON. The first Rachel JACKSON in this area that I have seen is in 1700 as a child of Roger JACKSON. In 1836, A Rachel JACKSON of Leany and her husband Edward JACKSON (policeman) had a child Amelia. A Thomas JACKSON married a Rachel CODE (b. 1805) and emigrated to Lanark Co., Ontario. It is possible that she was the one who was the wife of Joseph JACKSON mentioned in the 1834 deeds.

[30] James JACKSON

[31] John JACKSON

[32] Thomas JACKSON

[33] Isaac JACKSON. The name “Isaac” is most often mentioned in connection with theQuaker JACKSONs.

[34] Williamstown & JACKSONs:

  • BAYLY, John-JACKSON Deed: 114-24-77686  1727 Feb 3Between John BAYLY of Ballyneclogh Esq. Of 1 part & Thomas WATTERS of Spinansing Co. WICKLOW ... Joseph JACKSON & John JACKSON both of Watterstown, Co. Carlow of the other part ... demised to T WATTERS, Joseph JACKSON John JACKSON the town and lands of Williamstown in Barony of Rathvilly, as it held by Messrs William & Thomas BUNBURY [NOTE: See Turtle BUNBURY web site] of Lisnaveagh, Co. Carlow ... 3 lives ... Captain Walter MURRAY ... rent £237.16.4 WITNESS: Patrick BRYAN, Coolemaderahiny, Co. Wicklow; John BROWN of Mount Neal, Co. Carlow & Richard DEASE, City of Dublin, Gent. NOTE: Could this John JACKSON be the father of Thomas JACKSON “of Bough”?
  • A Mary Jane JACKSON, daughter of Richard JACKSON of Clonmore, Eagle Hill married John POLLARD in 1898. A Benjamin JACKSON was the witness.

[35] John JACKSON

[36] Thomas JACKSON of “Brook”.  I do not know where “Brook” is, but I wonder if he might be connected to the JACKSONs of the 1834 deeds.

[37] Thomas JACKSON of “Bough”, Parish of Rahill. See mention of his land there. At present my best guess is that he was a son of John JACKSON and Sarah JACKSON née JACKSON. See Williamstown footnote.

[38] Joseph JACKSON of “Brook”. I do not know where “Brook” is, but I wonder if he might be connected to the JACKSONs of the 1834 deeds.

[39] Joseph Jackson of Carlow.
