Leases held by Ambrose JACKSON. Following the money - in this case the leases of Ambrose JACKSON (there was likely more than one Ambrose JACKSON) - is likely to shed light on other JACKSONs who arrived in Co. Cork before him in the 1600s. He may be related to Lodowick JACKSON (abt 1634-1700). Lodowick's first child, Elizabeth, was buried in Youghall in 1666. She was four days old when she died. SEE: Jacksons of Canterbury & Nantwich England and Co. Cork, Ireland. This Family tree starts in Lancashire with the 1571 birth of Rev. Thomas JACKSON. He became the prebendary of Canterbury Cathedral and was a grandfather of Lodowick JACKSON of Youghall Co. Cork who served as a customs and paymaster in the mid-1600s. In the 1640s, Rev. Thomas experienced financial set-backs and had to retrench. The financial circumstances of his family was like many of their class whose sons lived in Ireland and worked as merchants, military, clerics, or government officials. Lancashire is a country where the forename Lodowick was common in the 1500s and 1600s.

In my “transcriptions”
I have included links to the original images so that others can see the
actual source. Please let me know when you do spot a need for correction. Since
most people (and search engines) read and/or scan on-line documents differently
than how we all did in the pre-digital era, my transcriptions have an idiosyncratic
approach (not completely literal). I have:
· Recorded all SURNAMES in
UPPER case.
· Highlighted dates and used numerical expressions for dates and currency eg £5 not five
pounds.
· Bolded all JACKSONs
· Recorded abbreviated
forenames in full eg: Wm. As William.
· Added hyperlinks for townlands (helps with finding them when there are variant spellings of
townland names).
· Shortened some descriptions
(eg. the witness details of the original lease and of the memorial are merged).
· Amended the spelling of
some words to make it more coherent for modern readers.
NOTE: In my transcription notes, I did not include
notes of every memorial where Ambrose JACKSON was only a Registrar
or Witness. Links to these memorials can be found at Nick Reddans Memorials of Deeds: Ambrose
JACKSON (this fabulous
resource is thanks to the work of Nick & hundreds of volunteers). |

NOTE: ROD: 1-7-2840. The
Dutch businessman Theodore Van Zevenhoven married Helena LONGFIELD (wealthy
Cork family) in 1708. This indenture of demise from that date passes his
property (as a marriage settlement) on what is now Lavitt's Quay to the
Longfields, more particularly to his wife. So the original owner of the house
on the quays (and at that time the quays themselves) was TVZ himself, which
he built, but he passed ownership of house and quays to west of it as far as
the Customhouse Slip (Coal Quay) to the Longfields, and through them to the
Lavits, and through them to the Perrys. SOURCE: Cork
