These are my notes from the cancellation book records for Cavananore. One thing that I can guarantee is that there will be errors. These are both technically and visually complex documents to transcribe. The colours used approximate those used in the original text, and are meant to correlate with the dates of the changes. Regrettably, I did not record the index at the front of each volume. Another problem may be how these transcriptions show up on some screens. It is quite a wide document & runs to at least 15 pages of text.
Cancellation books, such as these, for the 26 counties of Ireland are in Dublin. SEE: http://www.valoff.ie/research.htm For properties in Northern Ireland, the same kinds of records are called valuation records and they start in 1828. SEE: PRONI VAL/1. Corresponding maps are available under reference PRONI VAL/12D. An excellent guide to land records is at http://www.aughty.org/pdf/irl_land_property.pdf

Cancellation Books CAVANANORE. Barony of Dundalk Upper; Electoral Division of Upper Creggan

In the notes beneath, the term: In Fee L.A.P. refers to the Land Act Purchase. This Act resulted in many occupiers of the land being able to buy the land in the early 1900s and thus become landowners. Offices or “off” refers to outbuildings, in this case associated with farming. Think cows, horses, poultry and such - not stenographers.

These records pick up where Griffiths leaves off. Just to get you started, here are the Cavananore records from Griffiths. Throught, I have highlighted family names that are in my family tree:

P4. NOTE: I missed noting the dates on this page, but it precedes 1862 and the page that follows it. Based on information in other documents, John BRADFORD (died aft 1837), Thomas BRADFORD (1800-1872), husband of Margaret WALLACE & Samuel BRADFORD (1803-1881) are brothers, all sons of Samuel BRADFORD (1739-1818) of Cavananore & Margaret HENRY (1774-1846). Mary Jane OLIVER (1821-1875) is the daughter of Benjamin OLIVER (1765-1831) & Elizabeth BRADFORD (1785-1825).

An 1891 letter from Eliza JACKSON has some damning information about the Samuel BRADFORD who leased lands in 1891: "Accordingly, he came there on Friday accompanied by Bailiffs and evicted Mrs. McCoy, Thomas Murray, and an old woman who lives in one of the houses; allowing them to go in again as caretakers and giving each a penny a week." Her son, Thomas Jackson, was expected to return in February 1892, hopefully to right this wrong.

P17-19 NOTE: I am unsure if I have the occupier groupings aligned properly. They were confusing. Also, my scan missed recording the bits inside the binding in the centre of the book.

NOTE: The Annie LYNCH mentioned beneath was the wife of Thomas LYNCH. He died in 1951. It can be confusing since Thomas LYNCH's mother was also an Annie LYNCH whose husband Patrick had died in 1934. Pat FINN was a brother of Annie LYNCH from USA who made his wealth owning taxicabs in New York during WWII. He bought the property for the family, and had great plans for the property but died within six months of Thomas LYNCH. 4Aa would be the big house on the hill.
