This page is mostly a List of deeds of HYDEs which are not included in another list of HYDEs of Co. Cork. It is a working Draft document which I am using to create a more complete picture of the connections of HYDE family members to JACKSONs and others. In the next few weeks, there will likely be updates required. At present, I am also following the HYDEs involved in the book trade in Dublin and their probable connection to the Robert HYDE of Hyde's Coffee Shope (and hence the likely HYDE connections to the United Iriahmen). I will be soon uploading a family tree to make this all easier to follow.

Calendar of Ancient Records of Dublin , In The Possession Of The Municipal Corporation of that City . By John T. Gilbert

At the general assembly of the city on the 14th of May , 1681 , an act was passed condemnatory of the publication as a " scandalous and vindictive pamphlet . " The assembly declared that the author of that " black and ugly libel , " notwithstanding his pretended fictitious zeal for the Protestant religion , was one who , " having sucked in the venom of evil principles , now disgorged them among Protestants to infect and poison them with fears and jealousies of one another , thereby to expose them

This act headed with an engraving of the arms of Dublin , was published by Joseph Ray in 1681 per to In the same year the assembly appointed Ray printer general to the city , for which it was stated he was well qualified as being a freeman of Dublin , and an " able artist in the mystery or art of printing

NOTE: Joseph RAY 1668-1709), father of Sarah HYDE née RAY.

1685 History of the City of Dublin  J. T. Gilbert p178

Thornton issued the first newspaper published in Dublin , which was styled " The Dublin News Letter , " printed in 1685 by " Joseph Ray in College - green for Robert Thornton at the Leather Bottle in Skinner - row ; " it consisted of a single leaf of small folio size , printed on both sides , and written in the form of a letter , each number being dated , and commencing with the word , Sir . The existence of this publication was totally unknown to former writers , who universally alleged that " Pue 's Occurrences " was the first Dublin newspaper .

1690 History of the City of Dublin  J. T. Gilbert p25

Among the booksellers in College - green were William Winter ( 1685 ) , " at the Lord Primate 's Head ; " Joseph Ray , printer of a newspaper called the " Dublin Intelligence , the first Number of which was issued on the 30th of September , 1690 ; Neal and Mainwaring , at " Corelli 's Head , " opposite Anglesey - street ( 1737 ) , music publishers , -- the latter , Bartholomew Mainwaring , an accomplished musician , died in 1758 ; J. P. Droz ( 1744 - 49 ) , editor of the " Literary Journal , " already noticed ; J. Milliken ( 1771 - 73 ) ; Patrick Byrne , at No. 35 , corner of Church - lane ( 1778 - 84 ) , remarkable for his subsequent political connexions ; John Magee , at No. 41 ( 1777 – 89 ) , an extensive lottery broker , publisher of " Magee 's Weekly Packet , or Hope 's Lottery Journal of News , Politicks , and Literature , " first issued in June , 1777 , and with each of its early numbers was given a lottery ticket , for a chance of a prize of £ 50 . Magee was also proprietor of the " Dublin Evening Post , " in which , in 1789 , he published various satires on Richard , Daly Patentee of the Theatre Royal , and Francis Higgins . The latter , known by the appellation of the " Sham Squire , " was , it has been observed, a singular instance of what may be done in life by strict attention to private ends , without regard to the means .

NOTE: Was Francis HIGGINS any relation to Robert HIGGINS. This John MAGEE was the son of a James MAGEE of Belfast – not the son of Susanna HYDE & Robert MAGEE.

1695 Dublin Assembly Roll. 1695-96

Whereas the master , wardens and brethren of the corporation of cuttlers , painters and stationers petitioned the said assembly , setting forth that one James Malone , bookseller , a Papist , who , upon pretence of being free of the city of Dublin , though he acknow -- ledges he never took the oathes , yet stands in defiance of the corporation on account of his said pretended freedome ; that the said Malone came to the petitioners hall in the late troubles and demanded the charter of the said corporation , and likewise seized and carryed away from Joseph Ray , a brother of the said corporation , his printing press , bookes and other goods , and also was further mischievous to the Protestant members of this city and corporation ; that the said Malone in the late rebellion was a captain , commissioner of array and printer to the late king James , and was very active in printing and publishing divers seditious and treasonable libells against his present majestie and government , for which he was indicted and outlawed both in England and Ireland for high treason ; that the said Malone is at this time the principal promoter and trader in Popish bookes , which the petitioners conceive to be contrary to law , and therefore prayed to disfranchise the said James Malone by name , that he presume not hereafter to insist on his pretended freedom , to the prejudice of the petitioners : it is therefore ordered and agreed upon , by the authority of the said assembly , that the said James Malone , for the reasons aforesaid , be and is hereby disfranchised from the liberties and freedom of this city .

1698 History of the City of Dublin

Opposite to the Tholsel was the printing house of Joseph Ray ( 1690 ) , one of the most eminent booksellers in the city , and publisher , in 1698 , of the first edition of that celebrated work , " The Case of Ireland 's being bound by Acts of Parliament in England , stated , by William Molyneux , of Dublin , " which , as advocating the doctrine of Irish independence , was ordered by the English Parliament to be burned by the common hangman . " Mr. Ray , " says a writer of the time , " is slender in body ; his head rather big than little ; his face thin , and of a moderate size ; a smooth tongue , a voice neither deep nor shrill . His countenance is ever intermixed with joy and sweetness . He is a courteous man in his shop ; and ,being both printer and bookseller , has got a good estate in a few years . He is the best situated of any bookseller in Dublin . "

Ardmayle House in the townland of Clonmore North is marked on the first Ordnance Survey map. The Prices were resident here from at least the 1770s and Wilson mentions it as the seat of Mr. Price in the 1780s. "Ardmoyle", Cashel, was the residence of Thomas Price in 1814 and in 1837. Richard Price was the occupant in 1850 holding the house valued at £21.17 shillings from John Hyde. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage states that the present house dates from circa 1870s and was formerly the wing of an 18th century house demolished in 1951. Louis H. Grubb occupied at house at Clonmore North in 1906 valued at £56. This house is now known as Clonmore.

NOTE: Mary Anne HYDE was the wife of Clarendon HYDE who was the son of John HYDE & Mary WILDE. Of interest is that although their marriage took place April 9, 1755 in Leicester, England both of his family names are ones that were also rooted in Monaghan. The profession of surgeon is interesting as Oscar WILDE’s father (Sir William WILDE of Co. Monaghan) was a medical doctor. I do not know her maiden name, although ROCHE is a possibility.
