I have cross-referenced all the baptisms, marriages, burials and confirmations of Creggan Parish that relate to my family tree and that are available to me from a range of sources. My primary source was PRONI MIC 1-11. Some names are included only because they also reside in a significant townland - for example, Urker. Many of my notes are not much more than conjecture. Please take them with a grain of salt. In total, there are about 56 pages of transcriptions and notes, and several hundred names are mentioned.

Richard |
Johnston, John X James of
Dorsey |
|
I should look at the
original again to better understand the “X” – but it would seem likely that
this Richard is related to the JOHNSTONs of Dorsey who were confirmed at
Creggan Church in 1824, as well as a later batch confirmed in 1833.
NOTE: The name Richard JOHNSTON is of interest because of
the earlier Richard JOHNSTON who married Anne JACKSON, daughter of George
JACKSON & Margaret O’Laughlin of Urker in 1767. See also the baptism
of George JOHNSTON of Dorsey, son of James & Ann. |

She is the
daughter of Capt Samuel BALL & Mary HOWARD of Urker. Probate of the Will of Margaret Ball late of
Castle-road Dundalk County Louth Spinster who died 14 December 1898 granted
at Armagh to the Reverend Joseph G. Rainsford D.D. Rector of Dundall and John
William Turner Esquire both of Dundalk. She gave £1000 to grand-niece Annie E.A. JOHNSTONE plus her house
and furniture...other legatees |

SEE:
Burial Richard JACKSON of Liscalgot 1848, Feb 17. There may be a connection
to the line of JACKSONs that I am following – possibly a cousin. In 1825, a
Richard JACKSON was a tenant of Tullyvallen (one of Capt. REID’s tenants).
Also, a James GROSET who was possibly the husband of Jane JACKSON lived there
as well. |

An
illegitimately begotten child of Robert Bayley jun of Tray and mother

Ellis BAILIE (1775-1834) of Shortstone, hence this Robert jun was b abt 1809. |

Annavackey
is a townland associated with COULTERs, so it is of more than passing
interest that a William McCULLAGH married a Jane COULTER and had three sons,
sometime in the mid-1700s. It may be farfetched, but the wife may also be an
OLIVER. The jury is out. She may also be MAGEE. |

I do not
know where these TIPPINGs connect. There were TIPPINGS at Mounthill and
Castletown . They were landowners involved in leases with JACKSONs &
COULTERs. In the mid-1700s. Mary COULTER, a sister of Andrew COULTER (d.
1775) of Cavananore married Samuel TIPPING. Both the naming patterns &
geography would hint at a link with this Andrew TIPPING. |

One

who had the same name and was a JP. Sophia Kathleen McMATH married a . In the
1901 Census, a Sarah McMATH was a widow born in Monaghan age 64 in
Coolshannagh, hence b 1837. This would be the next generation, her husband
likely a brother of Sophia. One lost record said that Sarah JACKSON was b
1814 in Sterling Scotland and died in 1901 in Castleblayney. There was also a
son: Andrew Jackson McMATH. NOTE: This all needs more work. |

This is
curious because a Samuel COULTER had a wife named Emily Wilhemina BAILIE and
they had a son b 1881. I suspect this is a transcription error – either mine
or the parish clerk. I have entered him in my tree with his father as Samuel. |

COULTER had a wife named Emily Wilhemina BAILIE. Since there is a later
