I have cross-referenced all the baptisms, marriages, burials and confirmations of Creggan Parish that relate to my family tree and that are available to me from a range of sources. My primary source was PRONI MIC 1-11. Some names are included only because they also reside in a significant townland - for example, Urker. Many of my notes are not much more than conjecture. Please take them with a grain of salt. In total, there are about 56 pages of transcriptions and notes, and several hundred names are mentioned.

There is no gravestone record for her, but there is one for: Mary Smyth,
eldest daughter of Thomas Smythe of Silverbridge d. 19 Sept 1808. This
was one of the headstones in the CORR plot. The stone was weathered, so it
could easily have been “Marg.” SOURCE: P18, Guide to Creggan Church &

B 1773 This is possibly the
husband of both Barbara JACKSON & Martha GILMORE. SEE 1815 marriage. |
Gilmore, John |
Creggan |
Age 70 |
1823, Jan 22 |
|
b. 1753 It is possible that
he is the J. GILMORE who married Mary JACKSON (daughter of George JACKSON
& Margaret O’LAUGHLIN). It is also possible that he was the father of
both Samuel GILMORE (1795-1868) and George GILMORE of Coolderry (d 1832). |
Wallace, Anne |
Urker Creggan |
Age 56 |
1823, Apr 15 |
|
B 1767 NOTE: I believe that
this Anne is actually Jane WALLACE née DONALDSON [SOURCE: Creggan: Guide to
Creggan Church & Graveyard]. Why she is indicated here as being at Urker,
I do not know. No WALLACE shows up there in the 1828 records, but her husband
John WALLACE is also recorded as being from Urker, Clogher. Interestingly, I
have another “orphan WALLACE”: in 1839, a Richard JACKSON of Tullyvallen
married a Mary WALLACE. Since the DONALDSONS who were Anne - aka Jane -
WALLACE's parents were also of Tullyvallen, this starts to get even more
interesting. |

Johnston, Anna |

Daughter of
Graham
Johnston
Age 10 |
1825, Apr 7 |

B 1815 This father is
likely the Graham JOHNSTON mentioned in the 1817 inventory of John JACKSON’s
assets (in relation to a debt). |

B 1810 |
Wallace, John |
Cloghog Creggan |
Age 67 |
1827, Feb 2 |
1827, Jan 30 |
B 1760. He was the husband
of firstly Emelia HOAR and secondly of Jane DONALDSON. His son Robert
Grenville WALLACE was born to his first wife in 1786. His daughters Mary
Anne(1795), Jane (1806), Margaret(1811) Eliza & Kathleen were from his
second marriage. |
Wallace, John |
Urker Creggan |
Age 67 |
1827, Feb 2 |
|
Husband of Jane DONALDSON & father of 5 children. Is
it possible that although he was of Cloghog, that he died at Urcher? There
seem to be two records that I have transcribed. Of course, I may have
transcribed in error. |
Stephens, Mary |
Drumboe[?] |
Age 46 |
1827, Feb 4 |
|
B 1781 |
Donaldson, Alice |
Cloghog |
Age 66 |
1827, Feb 18 |
|
NOTE: I have two
transcriptions of this burial. I suspect that the age at death for this one
is the correct age. NOTE: This is the second record where both Cloghog
& Urcher are noted as the given townland. See beneath. |
Donaldson, Alice |
Urker Creggan |
Age 60 |
1827, Feb 18 |
|
B 1767 -daughter of Joseph
& Anne Donaldson of Tullyvallen, sister-in-law of James Wallace. NOTE:
George JACKSON & Margaret McLAUGHLIN had a daughter named Alice who
married an unnamed “LOY”. In later years, the LOWE family made their home at
Cloghog Lodge.. There was also an unnamed Alice who married a Samuel DONALDSON
(1753-1827 – son of William DONALDSON & Agnes). They probably married
about 1780 – given that the births of 6 children start in 1783. The latter is
a strong candidate for being this person, but this needs to be verified. |
Donaldson, Elizabeth Ann |
Creggan |
Age 24 |
1827, Jun 26 |
|
b. 1803. NOTE: Her death is mentioned in 1827 letter from Eliza JACKSON |
Donaldson, Samuel |
Creggan |
Age 74 |
1827, Jul 4 |
|
B 1753. I am guessing him
to be a Samuel DONALDSON (1753-1827 – son of William DONALDSON &
Agnes the husband of Alice DONALDSON above d. 1827, Feb 18 |
Oliver, Jane |
Creggan |
Age 87 |
1827, Oct 27 |
|
B 1740 NOTE: Check Deeds -
there was an OLIVER with ties to Dundalk. Also Andrew & ELinor OLIVER of
Newtownhamilton. Also as a resuly of the OLIVER ELGEE marriage, Joseph &
Benjamin OLIVER ended up with lands in Dundalk. And the Turner Barrett OLIVER
link |
Johnston, Jane |
|
Age 57 |
1827 Nov 19 |
|
b. 1770 The timing would be right for her to be a daughter
of Adam Blair JOHNSTON. Another possibility is that she was a wife of John JOHNSTON of Woodvale, and mother of Graham JOHNSTON. See: Johnstons of Woodvale. |
Donaldson, Mary |
Cloghog |
Age 41 |
1828, Feb 17 |
|
b. 1787 It is possible that she was the wife of Joseph
DONALDSON (1773-1838), or else his sister who had probably died unmarried (b
1769). |
Ball, Thomas |
Corliss |
Age 32 |
1829 Aug 10 |
|
b. 1797 Thomas BALL Esq. Corliss was recorded there in 1828.
A Lt. Thomas BALL (1642-1674) was one of those granted land in 1669 –
including for Corliss. I do not know the relationship between the two men. NOTE: A will of Thomas Ball, of Corlis, in the parish of Creggan, and barony of Upper Fewes, Co. Armagh, mentions wife Ann Ball, als Hamilton; three sons, Abraham, John, and William. Testator had a house in Crossmaglen, and property in Corlis. Exor., John Hamilton of Crossmaglen. Witnesses, J. Hamilton and Hugh Connor. There was a statue erected to a Thomas BALL, Master in Chancery at St. Patrick's Church Dublin in 1829.
|
Stephens, Frances |
Crossmaglen |
Age 60 |
1829 Dec 6 |
|
b. 1769 NOTE: This entry was before an August 1829 entry, so it my
be a year earlier. |
Donaldson, Samuel |
Cloghog |
Age 32 |
1830, May 11 |
|
b 1798 It is possible that he was a son of John DONALDSON
(b abt 1772) and Agnes DOWNS. |
Jackson, Elizabeth |
Liscalgot |
Age 60 |
1830, May 29 |
|
B 1770 There is a
possibility that she was a daughter of George JACKSON & Margaret
O’LAUGHLIN, although she did marry a WORTHINGTON or a SHEA. The projected
date of birth of 1770 would fit. NOTE: There
is also another JACKSON family connected to Liscalgot that I have yet to fit
in. |
Coulter, John |
Anavacky |
Age 27 |
1830, July 12 |
|
B 1803 NOTE: I may have a transcription error here. The
month may be January since this entry precedes the entry for Samuel Donaldson
on May 11. |
Wallace, Ann |
Dundalk |
|
1831 Dec 12 |
|
Possibly related to John WALLACE (1760-1827) |
Gilmore, George |
Coolderry |
Age 44 |
1832, Jan 10 |
|
B 1788 One place to look for where he might fit is as a
son of Mary JACKSON who married a J.GILMORE (since her father was called
“George”). SEE: Burials, Gilmore, John 1828 (therefore b. 1788) The argument
for this connection is also strengthened by a daughter Mary Jackson GILMORE
born to George GILMORE of Coolderry. |
Reed, Dorothea |
Rahans |
Age 80 |
1832 Feb 13 |
|
b. 1752 Her will was probated In the Index to Prerogative
Wills under Dorothea or Dorothy B[radshaw?] REED of Rahans, Co. Monaghan,

Johnston, William |
Dundalk |
Age 70 |
1832 Feb 18 |
|
b. 1762 He is in the right age range to be a child of Adam
Blair JOHNSTON. |
Stephens, Nicholina |
Crossmaglen |
Age 92 |
1832, June 15 |
|
B 1740 possibly a relation
of Thomas STEPHENS who married Barbara JACKSON |

b. 1755 It is hard to believe that he is not related to Capt. Samuel BALL ( 1757-1843) of Urker, but the Ball Family History does not mention a Thomas BALL with these dates. |

Age 64 |

b. 1757 Could she be Ann HAMILTON, widow of Thomas BALL (d. 1829) of Corlis? |
Johnston, John |
Longfield |
Age 87 |
1839 Jun 4 |
|
b. 1752 A son of John JOHNSTON (1729-1816) & Mary Unnamed.
See Sept 2, 1830 Deed. Brothers Thomas & James. Brother Thomas died
before 1830 and James after 1830. The Longfield connection makes me suspect that the following are related: Dorcas JOHNSTON late of Longfield, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan spinster deceased died 26 Sept 1872 at same place granted to Thomas JOHNSTON of Longfield Esq. brother. Effects under £1,500

Jackson, John |

Age 36 |

b. 1804 NOTE: I can’t place
him in the family yet, but I suspect he will tie in to the Richard JACKSON
line from Tullyvallen. |
Johnston, John |

Age 13 |

b. 1829. Probably a son of John JOHNSTON (1752-1839) & Mary. See

Henry, Mary |

Age 58 |
1847 Sep 11 |
|
B 1789. NOTE: I suspect
that Crossan is actually Crossmaglen. Also, that he would
likely be related to the George STEPHENS b 1810. This is supiciously close to a Creggan Parish gravemarker: In memory of George Stephens who died the 8th of September 1846 aged 58 years; also his beloved wife Elizabeth Stephens who died on the 9th of February 1869 aged 67 years: "Their end was peace"; erected by their son George as a tribute of afection. |

of the personal estate of Richard Donaldson late of Sytrim House Crossmaglen
County Armagh Medical Doctor deceased who died 4 March 1876 at same place
were granted at Armagh to Sarah Cannon Donaldson of Sytrim House Crossmaglen
aforesaid Spinster the Sister of said deceased. |

|
b. 1832. Mother of Gordon
Holmes STITT. She died when many of her children were quite young and they
were raised by her sister-in-law, Mary STITT (who married McBRIDE). This is a
good prospect for the woman in the photo “Stitt of Derryfalone” from Gilford
Castle. She may be a daughter of William STITT
& Susanna. |
Reed, James |
Rahans |
Age 42 |
1877 May 5 |
|
b. 1835 . Probably
related to the John Reed who was a landlord and magistrate. He married the
niece of Captain James McCullagh, Camlymacullagh, and owned part of the
McCullagh estate. There is a memorial to him in Donaghmoyne Parish Church
which reads. In loving memory of John Reed Esqr of Rahans for many years
churchwarden of this parish. This table was erected by his brother James and
William Reed. Related to Dorothea REED (d 1832). |
Corr, Mary |

Age 74 |

B 1806 A death of a Mrs CORR is mentioned in a letter dated 1880 July 7 from Eliza JACKSON to her son Thomas
JACKSON. I suspect she was the wife of William CORR, a grocer in Crossmaglen. |

therefore been born in 1815). He married an unnamed Elizabeth who died Aug

|
1883, June 1 is the date
of death that I have in my family tree. It is corroborated by a letter June
8, 1883 (Eliza JACKSON to Thomas JACKSON). I suspect the date I originally
had of 1885 was a transcription error, so I changed it to “1883”. SOURCE:
Will Abstracts: GILMORE, Samuel, late of Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan. Surgeon

Age 85 |

B 1798 NOTE: The Sarah JACKSON who married Joseph BARTLEY was
b1811. This is a large enough discrepancy in birth dates that I suspect there
were 2 Sarah BARTLEYs. |

b. Nov 28, 1839 in Co.
Leitrim. This is the older brother of Sir Thomas JACKSON. My notes from the
Parish Register had him born at Irvingstown, Co. Fermanagh, but he wasn’t, so
I have entered the correct info. Derryvalley was the home of his McCULLAGH relations. |

1889, Nov 13 |
|
B 1814. This is the father
of Sir Thomas Jackson. NOTE: The minister Rev.
John TURNER was not the minister of Creggan, but of Barronstown. It seems he was not hired by the
Creggan congregation - a dispute that probably triggered David JACKSON's quitting
Creggan congregation for some time (see undated 1885 letter and Dec 2 1885) . Rev. John Turner,
Rector of Barronstown, and formerly Headmaster of the Dundalk Educational
Institution, was a learned and successful educationalist, and raised the
Institute to a very high level in the educational world. On his retirement he
officiated at Killencoole, and also was Acting Military Chaplain at Dundalk
Barracks, prior to his appointment to Barronstown. His eldest son, Mr. John
Wm. Turner, M.A., is the efficient Agent here to Lord Roden; whilst his
second son, Mr. Henry Turner, has been Resident Magistrate in the South for
many years- Rev. John Turner died 1897. SOURCE: Tempests Jubilee

I am guessing that this is Elizabeth Johanna JACKSON –
wife of John JACKSON. If so, it would accord with a confirmation date
as well as a christening date of 1817 – the christening done on the day of
her father’s death. "Will of Elizabeth Johanna DONALDSON late of
Kiltylane [sic] d. 30 March 1900 granted at Armagh to Eliezer GILMORE,
farmer. Effects 45 pounds." NOTE: The burial date is before the
death date – something is a bit off here. |

b. 1809 NOTE She is likely the Sarah WRIGHT in the 1901 Census who was age 86 (a discrpancy of 5 years with the parish record). She was born in Co. Louth, and was living with her widowed daughter Margaret in Cregganban, Crossmaglen. Her daughter was a "farmer". |

b. 1837 He does not appear in the 1901 Census, although there is a listing for a Robert CAULTER. This is an obvious mistransciption. The pdf makes it clear that it was a Robert (age 54) & Eliza COULTER (age 52) who both lived and farmed in Dorsy. They were no longer there in 1911. |
